It has been such a game changer to find the push sports thumb brace for my outdoor activities. As an occupational therapist, I don’t always apply the things I tell other people to myself, so my hands and thumbs fatigue really quickly when I’m trying to do yardwork. I have found that using splints for doing some of my daily activities supports my endurance, and helps me do the things that I am excited to do for longer periods of time.

Do you ever have pain with yardwork or feel like you don’t have the endurance to participate? Check out supports!

As you may have noticed, I have been really enjoying using kinesio tape with my patients and also within my family. As a family of hypermobile individuals, we are always looking for different tools to provide support to our bodies, and I am excited to share those with you as well.

Today, we are looking at postural support for those of you who find yourself leaning over or sitting at the desk or caring for small people or animals. This technique can help with giving you queuing to your body working on engaging different muscles of the body and also offloading some of our postural habits.

Give this technique a try and let me know how it feels in supporting your body.

One of my favorite splints to recommend a patients are 2 1/2 buddy ring splints! created this splint to help support the small finger for lateral and extension movement patterns. This little splint can really improve the overall endurance of your hand for grip and holding positions! When I learned about this product in 2014, I was blown away by what they were already providing for the community and they continue to be advocates for the and communities!

Small fingers can be problematic for those with hypermobility. They often take a lot of pressure or be off in their own world. It give some feedback to the lateral side of the hand, I like to focus on MCP joint flexion (the big knuckle) and to help activate the intrinsic hand muscles! I’ve been feeling really supported with neotype lately and today, I’m using rocktape, which has a really great feel on the skin. This is a newer technique for me and it’s been a really good cue! Try it out and let me know how it feels for you!

As a hand therapist who works closely with patients in the hypermobility community, I have a few favorites tools to help support the symptoms that are often experienced.

❤️ are often a recommendation as they are able to support the digits from going into positions of instability and provide good feedback to the body for stability.

❤️ I also love to recommend oval 8 swan neck splints as another options! They come in tan and clear!

❤️ I’ve also have been highly recommending and other brands digi-sleeves which are little compression sleeves for each individual finger to help with symptoms of swelling.

When we can have the tools we needs to help us get ahead of symptoms, our participation in the activities we love can grow and improve. My goal as an occupational and hand therapist is to support my community to get back to things that bring them joy!

There have been a few questions on how to put on the for standing and seated, so I wanted to go through a quick tutorial today to give you some of the basics on how to feel successful and putting on the body braid independently. Like anything it can take some time to feel comfortable putting on it taking off the body braid but with some practice you will hopefully feel more confident in using your posture support garment!

Comment below in what activities you like your wear your body braid!

Self technique for thumb and forearm tendinitis!

I l always wondered why I was prone to thumb/ forearm tendinitis. This became especially worse after having children. I now realize that some of my forearm tendinitis is secondary to the hyperextension I experience in the joints of my thumb. There are lots of tools and techniques that we can utilize to support to this area of the body and taping is one of them. When I go to the gym it is much harder for me to wear the silver ring splints that I like to wear during other activities so I have found that taping is much more convenient and much more friendly for utilizing equipment at the gym. This can give me the proprioceptive feedback that my joint needs to stabilize and also gives me some of the pressure that I need to maintain joint alignment. This technique is not super simple to do on your own, but with practice you can do it pretty quickly prior to any activity that you may feel this could support you with. Give it a try and in the comments, let me know how it goes for you!!

Something I’m getting back into again is using kinesiology tape! It’s been a minute and I’m really loving it for certain patients! My favorite thing about it is that we can give the body cues to slightly adjust its position.

Whether it’s to:
💪🏼Activate a muscle
🧘🏼‍♀️Inhibit a muscle
🧠Bring awareness to the body

This can be an excellent tool to use. There are also alot of ways to cue different posture adjustments, so this video is showing one of the many things I use in my personal practice.

Stay tuned for more fun content from my little corner of the interwebs ❤️
