Saunas are going clinical.
NPR just ran a feature on heat therapy entering mental-health research: a 50-person randomized trial in Oslo pairing sauna with mental-health habits, and NIH-funded work at UCSF studying heat for depression, sleep, and loneliness.
The data point that stopped me: in a landmark trial, a majority of the treatment group saw a 50% drop in depression symptoms within a week of a single heat session — and it held through the six-week follow-up.
Full honesty: the science is early. UCSF’s Ashley Mason puts it perfectly — “The science is new, but the practice is not.”
You already knew the sauna was doing something for you. Now the science is catching up. We just make sure your phone survives the session.
