Asiakare Minor, 32, pleaded guilty last month to abduction and violating a protection order in connection with the attack.

Last November, a nurse at OSU Medical Center was violently strangled while caring for patients. Today, the person who assaulted her was sentenced in a Franklin County Courthouse.

But the trauma didn’t end there.

She remains off work, still fighting the workers’ compensation system while dealing with physical and emotional pain. She no longer feels safe at work — and she isn’t alone.

Most direct-care nurses in Ohio have experienced workplace violence, and nearly 60% say their workplaces lack adequate safety measures.

Those who hurt nurses and health professionals must be held accountable. Violence against healthcare workers cannot be treated as “part of the job.”

Ohio Nurses Association continues fighting for safer workplaces and stronger protections because safety is not optional.

"Healthcare is not 'gig work,' and nurses and health professionals cannot simply drop into a facility like an Uber driver and safely provide care without the institutional knowledge, training, coordination, and familiarity with systems, policies, equipment, patient populations, and care teams that are essential to protecting patient safety. Continuity, experience within a specific clinical environment, and investment in a stable workforce are critical components of safe patient care."
