Dragons 🐉 How many claws should they have? What’s some differences in styles? What are significant aspects?

3 claws
Common in Japan; also historically used in China
Japanese/East Asian, spiritual, less overtly imperial

4 claws
Chinese nobility / high status; also Korean traditions
Authority, nobility, prestige

5 claws
Strongly associated with the Chinese emperor
Supreme authority, imperial power, divinity

Horns also matter. Traditional East Asian dragons don’t have western-style demon or ram like horns. Chinese/Japanese tend to have antler style like a deer.

The head is very important.
Traditional Chinese dragons are composites of multiple animals. The head can incorporate characteristics associated with animals such as deer, cattle, camels, crocodilians and other creatures.

A short, crocodile-like Western dragon head with bat wings immediately pushes the design toward Western fantasy rather than Chinese/Japanese tradition.

A Chinese art concept - huà lóng diǎn jīng — essentially “adding the finishing touch to the dragon’s eyes.” It comes from the idea that painting the eyes brings the dragon to life.

Those long whiskers are a major part of the East Asian dragon silhouette. They’re not just facial hair. They contribute to the dragon’s celestial / supernatural / serpentine character and make the head read differently from a Western dragon.

Long, elegant whiskers are more traditional and spiritual.

Short, aggressive facial features are more monstrous/fierce.

Body shape matters too.
East Asian dragons are generally long, serpentine creatures rather than the bulky, four-legged European dragon.

These are just some of the things to consider when drawing a dragon, there are many more. Go draw!

This client wanted a symbol of strength, honor, and resilience. The samurai sword symbolizes the resilience and strength while the Gi symbol represents honor and morality.
