Reid Health has made moves in the past few months to close a budget deficit they had been facing. One of those decisions was announcing the closure of the HealthWorks facility. However, a deal has been reached to see the facility re-branded and remain open.
Brennan Joy will be taking over the HealthWorks facility once Reid and himself can finish the transition and acquisition process for the facility. Joy said that he had not planned on operating a fitness center but wanted to be a part of preserving the facility.
“I didn’t really know that I was going to look into this and continue HealthWorks, or make the acquisition or look into owning a gym period,” Joy said. “I just kind of reached out to Reid, got Jason’s [Troutwine Reid Health Vice President] information and then started talking about equipment and then it led into the acquisition.”
Troutwine said that this deal was a win-win.
“From our perspective, this is an exciting development,” Troutwine said. “The fact that we are able to offer, through Brennan’s help, a resource for the community to exercise and for members to be able to stay and enjoy an environment they’ve become familiar with each other. A lot of friends work out together so to be able to transition to Brennan is exciting for us as well.”
Joy said that being able to keep this community staple in operation was important to him.
Fayette County is and historically has been in the bottom of the state in the overall health, so being able to preserve a facility that is used to keep the community active is a priority.
“This has turned out to be a win-win for everyone from my perspective,” Troutwine said. “Obviously Reid wasn’t in a position to continue operating HealthWorks, but we heard loud and clear that HealthWorks was important and that the fitness center was important to the community, so for Brennan to step in and say ‘Hey this is something I am going to take on,’ and for us to know that it is locally owned and operated is super important to us.”
Joy will be leasing the facility and acquiring the equipment. The facility will be known as the Enjoy Fitness Club once the transition of operations is completed.
“With this acquisition we are continuing almost all the services from Reid HealthWorks,” Joy said. “There will be some immediate changes. Some of those will be rolling out in early October and into November.”
Enjoy Fitness Club will operate out of this facility for the next year, but afterwards they will be moving to a new location between August and October of 2024. Joy said the announcement of the new building will be made public before the end of the year.
Reid Health Vice President Jason Troutwine said the transition between Reid and Joy will be seamless and as such the facility will remain open with no closures.
Joy said that in October they will transition the facility to a 24/7 facility and then at the end of the month the will look to offer a supplement store. This will be open to the general public and not just gym members.
Everyone who is currently enrolled at HealthWorks will have the opportunity to sign up and be transferred over. Joy said they are changing software, so there may be some challenges, but that the transition should be relatively easy.
The Rock City Boxing classes currently being offered in the facility will continue to be operated as well.
Troutwine said the parties are working on changing signage and said people will start to notice the changes around the beginning of October.
