📚 From The Vault: Change the Task. Not the Purpose.
When dementia makes a familiar activity harder, our first instinct may be to step in and do it for someone.
But sometimes the better question is:
What part of this can they still do?
Someone who once prepared dinner may still enjoy washing vegetables, stirring ingredients, or helping set the table.
Someone who loved gardening may not be able to manage the whole yard anymore—but watering plants or working with a flowerpot at the table may still be meaningful.
And someone who handled the laundry for years might still enjoy folding towels or matching socks.
The activity may need to change as abilities change. The meaning behind it doesn't necessarily have to disappear.
Look for the part of the activity that still fits the person—their abilities, interests, comfort, and safety—and give them an opportunity to participate.
💙 The goal isn’t doing it the old way. The goal is preserving purpose and participation.
