What if COVID is still affecting the way your nervous system talks to your immune system?
This is where the connection between COVID and MCAS gets really interesting.
Your nicotinic receptors are involved in communication between the nervous system and immune system. When acetylcholine binds to these receptors, it can help activate pathways that essentially tell inflammation to pump the brakes. And mast cells are sitting right in the middle of that conversation.
Now add COVID.
There is emerging research looking at how COVID spike proteins and spike fragments may interact with nicotinic receptor signaling and potentially alter that inflammatory communication. That does NOT mean COVID automatically causes MCAS.
But it does give us another piece of the puzzle.
You have an infection affecting the body. You have nervous system signaling. You have immune system regulation. You have inflammatory cytokines. And you have mast cells responding to what is happening around them.
This is exactly why I keep saying MCAS is NOT simply a histamine problem.
If all we do is focus on histamine, we are looking at the reaction without asking why the immune system became so reactive in the first place.
The nervous system and immune system are constantly talking to each other.
And if that communication changes, the downstream immune response can change too.

If everything suddenly makes you react, the trigger may not be the whole problem.
With MCAS, the bigger question is why the immune system became so reactive in the first place.
Your mast cells are constantly responding to signals from the gut, infections, environmental exposures, hormones, nutrients and your stress response. Sometimes it is not one huge problem. It is multiple systems adding stress until your threshold gets lower and lower.
That is when foods, heat, exercise, smells, alcohol or things you tolerated for years suddenly start causing symptoms.
So instead of only asking, “What am I reacting to?” start asking, “What keeps pushing my immune system toward that reaction?”
That is where the real investigation begins.

MCAS can make the body feel like it is constantly stuck in immune overdrive.
When gut dysfunction, yeast, bacterial overgrowth, mold exposure, poor digestion, and inflammation start stacking up, the bigger question becomes: what keeps telling the immune system that it is under attack?
That is where we start looking deeper than the symptom.

For this person, it showed up as autoimmune thyroid issues, GI dysfunction, hormone problems, and the feeling that the whole body was reacting at once.
With MCAS, the question is not just how to calm histamine. It is why the immune system is staying so reactive in the first place.

We often focus on histamine release in MCAS, but what about clearing it? Your body's ability to methylate, with help from folate and B12, is crucial. Low folate can impair histamine breakdown, increasing your burden. Understanding this methylation cycle is key to managing MCAS.

With MCAS, what came first: the gut problem or the immune system problem?
Sometimes we know, and sometimes we do not. What we do know is that the gut and immune system can start feeding each other. Mast cells sit right under the gut lining, and when they become activated they can release histamine, prostaglandins, tryptase, and other inflammatory signals that affect gut motility, intestinal permeability, and nerve signaling.
Once that gut environment starts changing, the nervous system and immune system respond to those changes too. Now the gut can influence the immune system, the immune system can influence the gut, and the feedback loop keeps building.
That is why with MCAS I do not want to only ask, “How do we lower histamine?” I want to know why those mast cells are being stimulated in the first place and what is keeping that reaction going.
🧩 MCAS is not one isolated problem. The goal is to understand the whole conversation happening between the gut, immune system, and nervous system.

MCAS and POTS may be way more connected than most people realize.
MCAS is not just about histamine, and POTS is not just about a racing heart.
Mast cells can release prostaglandins like PGD2 that relax blood vessels.
When those vessels relax, more blood can pool in the legs and abdomen when you stand.
Now less blood is getting back to your heart and brain.
Your body has to compensate.
Adrenaline rises. Your sympathetic nervous system kicks in. Your heart rate increases as your body tries to move that blood back where it needs to go.
So that racing heart may not be the original problem.
It may be your body trying to compensate for the blood pooling underneath it.
That is why someone dealing with MCAS and POTS can experience dizziness, adrenaline surges, red or purple legs, heart racing, and feeling terrible when they stand.
The immune system, blood vessels, and autonomic nervous system are not separate conversations.
They are all talking to each other.

MCAS is not always the problem. Sometimes it is the response to everything happening underneath it.
When someone is dealing with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, I want to know what is putting pressure on their immune system.
Are there major food reactions?
Is there inflammation?
Are there bacterial or other gut infections?
Are nutrients depleted?
Is the body struggling with methylation or mitochondrial function?
Because when enough of those pieces start stacking up, the immune system can become overwhelmed and mast cells can become increasingly reactive.
That is when we start seeing the skin reactions, bloating, temperature sensitivity, brain fog, food reactions, and the feeling that your body is suddenly reacting to everything.
So instead of only asking how to lower histamine, I want to ask a bigger question:
Why does your immune system feel like it needs to keep releasing it?
Testing gives us clues so we can start understanding what is happening underneath the symptoms.
