WE TEACH THE “WHY,” NOT JUST THE STEPS
As an EMS Instructor/Coordinator, American Heart Association Instructor, and AHA Training Faculty member, I have learned that many people know where to place AED pads but not what the AED actually does.
At Minuteman EMS Tutoring & CPR Training Center, students learn that an AED analyzes the heart’s electrical rhythm and shocks only certain life threatening rhythms (ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia). The shock does not “jump-start” a flatlined heart; it may allow an organized rhythm to return.

Using a simple ECG/EKG drawing, we provide this clearly identified supplemental lesson beyond the required AHA BLS content. Our students understand why they must activate 911, begin high quality CPR, apply the AED quickly, clear during analysis and shock, and immediately resume CPR.

We don’t simply teach people what to do we help them understand why they are doing it.

*A WORD FROM AN EXPERIENCED EMS INSTRUCTOR/COORDINATOR

During two rescuer adult BLS CPR, the compressor counts to 30 so the second rescuer knows when to give 2 breaths. The AED metronome may guide compression rate, but it does not replace counting and communication.

However, follow AED commands on: clear for analysis, avoid touching the patient, deliver a shock if advised, and immediately resume CPR. Continue 30:2 CPR with minimal interruptions.

I can hear some of you naysayers talking about the losse pads therefore, my answer in advance is: The loose pads were training pads on a manikin. With a real patient, poor contact would be corrected immediately.

This is professional BLS teamwork: count, communicate, minimize interruptions, and save lives!

Why do EMS students need qualified instructors along with a quality training manual? Follow Mr. Jerome Moore, EMT-B, EMS Instructor/Coordinator, and former Paramedic, as he explains.

I am so dedicated to emergency preparedness that I’m even teaching my daughter’s dog, Oreo, how to dial 911! My daughter is a psychotherapist, so Oreo already knows how to remain calm under pressure. However, judging by how fast he’s scrolling, he may be calling Instacart to report an emergency shortage of dog treats!

l am so dedicated to emergency preparedness that I even taught my little dog, Oreo, how to dial 911! My wife and my daughter [a psychotherapist] watched in complete amazement as Oreo quickly worked the phone. For a moment, I was one proud EMS instructor…

Then I checked the screen.

That little rascal wasn’t calling 911, he was placing an emergency Instacart order for doggie treats! Apparently, his bowl being half empty is a Code 3 emergency! lol lol

Dog-gone it, Oreo! I taught you how to save lives not how to order snacks! LoL LOL LOL

What you are hearing follows the demonstration of 5-firm-back-blows.

The instructor is now strongly emphasizing that abdominal thrusts must never be performed on an infant. Instead, rescuers should now deliver 5-chest-thrusts repeat the 5 & 5 until the object is expelled or the infant becomes unresponsive.

Some viewers may question the hand position demonstrated. The heel of the hand may be oriented in either of the two positions, provided it is placed correctly on the infant’s sternum and effective chest thrusts are delivered. I chose this orientation because it is also consistent with the one hand position students may use for infant CPR, helping to reduce confusion if the infant becomes unresponsive.
