Experts warn we may be the final generation to witness fireflies.
The childhood wonder of chasing fireflies on humid summer nights may soon exist only in memory. Researchers caution that humans could be among the last people to watch the glowing mating displays of these cherished beetles. Around the world, firefly numbers are falling quickly.

This silent ecological crisis is mainly caused by habitat loss, pesticide exposure, increasing global temperatures, and light pollution, which disturbs the dark spaces they need to mate and survive.

As important hunters of pests and living signs of environmental health, the disappearing glow of fireflies points to a wider danger for our ecosystems. To stop their total loss, conservationists are calling for urgent action, including rebuilding wetlands, limiting artificial night lighting, and choosing sustainable farming methods.

Without these changes, future generations may only know the magical dance of these living stars through stories and screens.
