Today is my diaversary. Thirty-five years since my first insulin injection without a day (or night)off. The irony is not lost on me that I became insulin dependent the day after Independence Day.

I have used insulin vials and needles, then old Medtronic pumps beginning in 1999. I gave birth to two healthy children at ages 39 and 41. I have no complications and have maintained my A1C under 7 for most of that time menopause reeled havoc on my levels - crazy hormones!. I have used Omnipod and now Twiist with a CGM.

I began my advocacy with the ADA back in the 90s, then later with JDRF, now Breakthrough T1D. I am a mother, was an ER nurse, a corporate software executive, and a nursing informatics expert. I have been the HOA president, assistant jr cheer coach, NCL board member, room mom helper, church event organizers, back yard pool life guard and Covid tutor to my kids. I make diabetes work, so my life works.

In 2017, a dragonfly helped me understand that success in diabetes meant transformation and personal growth, not strict adherence. Learning to advocate for yourself and love yourself enough to put your needs ahead of others. Better Diabetes Life was born out of that dragonfly sighting.

Now my focus is on holistic wellness and whole-person care as a nurse coach, a nursing specialty I didn’t even know existed, but one that held the same philosophy I had all along.

And I am on the last leg of writing my book, “Diabetes is a Narcissist.” I want to share my perspective and tools with others.

When the busy city no longer held the same sparkle it once did, I found peace and reconnected with nature in Arkansas.

My first act was diabetes-free.

My second act was overcoming, battling, proving, and growing.

This third act is embracing peace and marveling that I am still here 35 years later thanks to a little 10 mL vial of liquid life, which has cost a few dollars to a few hundred dollars depending on the politics of the day.

I get to make choices that align with my soul, be friends with people who choose to show up, and do things that create awe and wonder.

And even though diabetes has changed my life, it is a gift that reminds me daily, sometimes hourly, how precious life is and how lucky I am to be here, in this time, this place, and this body, enjoying the ride.

They came, they competed, they checked their blood glucose levels and they did us proud! Two medals and two top 12 finishes for the athletes with diabetes at the Winter Olympics - well done all, for showing that diabetes doesn’t haven’t limits!
