Your baby doesn’t hate tummy time… they just need a little help finding a position where they can actually succeed. 💚
Look at the difference a small change made for this 6-week-old. 👀
By adding a rolled towel under the chest and bringing the arms into a more supportive position, we gave baby a better base to work from—and suddenly there was much more motivation and opportunity to lift that little head!
But why am I working on tummy time during a lactation visit? 🤱
Because as an IBCLC and Qualified Tummy Time Instructor, I’m looking at feeding as a whole-body function.
Feeding doesn’t happen with just the mouth. Head and neck control, jaw strength, trunk strength, body positioning, movement patterns, and oral-motor function all work together. What I see in a baby’s body can give me important information about what may also be happening at the breast or bottle.
That’s why sometimes our lactation visits include more than working on latch. We may work on oral function, positioning, movement, tummy time, and other strategies that support the baby as a whole.
✨ Sometimes the smallest adjustment helps us see what a baby is capable of when we give their body the right support.
Tummy time isn’t separate from feeding development—it is just another piece of the puzzle. 💚
