The Healing Order

The Healing Order Chinese medicine and naturopathic medicine clinic located in the Historic Columbia Gorge Scenic Area, outside Portland, Oregon.

As part of our expanding mission, The Healing Order inaugurates a new era in our practice, allowing us to focus more intensely on our patients and offer a greater array of holistic therapies in the future. This is a chance for us to model a different kind of healthcare for other providers, and for a world that seems to keep wanting to only treat illness, rather than support health. We will continu

e to schedule consultations, dietary evaluations, acupuncture, and moxibustion and, of course, provide custom Chinese herbs and supplements at our Gordon Creek location until we can move into our new home next year.

A familiar face to many in our community, Dr. Chris Metro has been practicing at the intersection of Classical Chinese Medicine, naturopathic medicine, and herbal medicine for more than two decades.

Since 2006, he has trained and worked closely with Dr. Heiner Fruehauf, with a particular focus on complex and difficult-to-treat conditions. His approach is thoughtful, deeply rooted in tradition, and shaped by years of clinical experience.

Outside the clinic, Dr. Metro is also an avid beekeeper, medicinal herb gardener, and orchard keeper.

We’re grateful to have him as such an established and beloved part of The Healing Order.

Dr. Metro is currently accepting appointments at THO. Visit the link in our bio to learn more or schedule a consultation.

Care begins with listening.

A first visit at The Healing Order is designed to give our practitioners time to understand more than an isolated symptom.

Through conversation, observation, pulse and tongue assessment, and other evaluation methods, we begin to look at the broader patterns shaping each person’s health.

When appropriate, the consultation may also include electrodermal screening with the MORA system as an adjunctive tool for exploring individual responses and informing the practitioner’s overall assessment.

From there, care is shaped around the individual — drawing from therapies such as acupuncture, moxibustion, bodywork, herbal medicine, and other modalities offered at The Healing Order.

The Art of Moxa 🔥

Moxibustion is as much about technique as it is about warmth.

From the preparation of the moxa to the way heat is carefully directed toward specific points and areas of the body, each treatment is guided by observation, intention, and the individual needs of the person receiving it.

The process is quiet, precise, and deeply rooted in the traditions of Chinese Medicine.

At The Healing Order, Moxibustion may be incorporated into an individualised treatment plan alongside acupuncture and other therapies.

Planning your first Cedar Enzyme Bath?

A little preparation can help you get the most out of the experience.

Unlike a traditional bath, you’ll be immersed in a warm blend of cedar and rice bran, with heat created naturally through fermentation. Most sessions last about 15–20 minutes, followed by a cool shower, rehydration, and time to relax in the charcoal room.

Before your visit, we recommend arriving well hydrated and having eaten beforehand, as the deep warmth can feel intense.

Swipe through for 5 things to know before your first Cedar Enzyme Bath — and when you’re ready to experience it for yourself, book your session at The Healing Order through the link in our bio.

Acupuncture at The Healing Order

In our peaceful treatment rooms, experience the living tradition of classical acupuncture. Our practitioners work with precision and care, using fine needles or gentler means such as teishin (non-insertion acupuncture tools), to guide your qi back into balance. Often they add the comforting glow of burning moxa, which penetrates deeply with its herbal warmth. The goal is to open all blockages and to relax the system—many guests feel a spreading sense of warmth, followed by a sense of peace and fresh energy.

Acupuncture sessions are available at The Healing Order. Visit our website to learn more or book your appointment.

Why Warmth Matters in Chinese Medicine

In Chinese medicine, warmth is more than a physical sensation. It is often used therapeutically to support movement, circulation, and the body’s ability to restore balance.

Moxibustion is one traditional way of bringing that warmth into treatment. Made from dried mugwort, moxa is carefully applied to specific points or areas of the body according to the individual’s presentation and needs.

The experience can feel grounding, deeply warming, and restorative — a reminder that sometimes, healing begins by creating the right conditions for the body to settle and respond.

Massage at The Healing Order 🍃

Our East Asian therapeutic massage goes far beyond ordinary bodywork. Rooted in classical Chinese medicine, with related traditions in Japan and Korea, practitioners use targeted pressure, stretches, and flowing movements along the body’s meridian pathways.

The work is guided by cultivated skill, intention, and qi, creating a sense of warmth and flow that can feel both grounding and revitalizing. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all routine, each session is shaped around what the body is presenting that day.

The experience is designed to support greater ease, flexibility, and a deeper sense of connection with the body.

Massage sessions are available at The Healing Order. Visit our website to learn more or book your appointment.

What does a Cedar Enzyme Bath experience look like?

Your session begins by settling in the warm cedar mixture, where you are gently covered and surrounded by natural heat.

For about 15-20 minutes, you rest in the bath while staying hydrated and keeping cool as needed.

Afterward, a refreshing cool shower helps you rinse off and reset before moving into our Charcoal Room, where you can slow down, relax, and let the experience settle in.

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion, often simply called moxa, is a traditional therapy used alongside acupuncture and other forms of Classical Chinese Medicine.

The practice involves the careful burning of dried mugwort near specific areas of the body to provide a gentle, penetrating warmth. Depending on the technique, moxa may be held above the skin, used in combination with acupuncture needles, or applied in other traditional forms.

In Chinese medicine, warmth is an important therapeutic tool. Moxibustion may be incorporated into treatment when a practitioner wants to warm the body, encourage circulation, or support areas where there is a pattern of cold or stagnation.

Beyond its clinical purpose, moxa is also a distinctly sensory experience—the warmth, herbal aroma, and quiet pace of the treatment create an opportunity to slow down and settle into the body.

At The Healing Order, therapies such as moxibustion are selected according to each guest’s individual presentation rather than offered as a one-size-fits-all treatment.
