Grief is not something the nervous system simply “gets over.”

When a bond is gone, the grief can feel overwhelming, and it deserves to be honored with compassion, not minimized.

Chronic Illness, Menopause & Regulation

Chronic stress impacts more than emotions. It affects hormones, inflammation, sleep, pain, immune function, and the nervous system itself.

Individuals navigating chronic illness, autoimmune conditions, or menopause, can find that pets provide grounding, comfort, routine, and emotional co-regulation. Their presence can help create moments of calm in bodies that have spent years carrying stress and survival responses.

Healing is not always found in doing more. Sometimes it is found in connection, safety, and regulation.

For many people, pets are far more than companions. They become a source of safety, comfort, and emotional regulation, especially for those navigating trauma, chronic illness, stress, or grief. The bond we share with animals can calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and provide unconditional connection during life’s hardest seasons.

Because these bonds are so deep, losing a beloved pet can feel devastating. It is not “just losing an animal.” It can feel like losing safety, routine, companionship, and one of the purest forms of love we’ve known. Grief honors attachment, and that grief deserves space.

This was a personal reflection on loss, healing, and the human-animal connection that felt deeply relevant to the work I do and the people whose lives I touch. I hope this conversation resonates with your nervous system.

Grief is not measured by whether the loss was human or animal. The nervous system responds to attachment, love, safety, and connection.

Many people see their pets as family, emotional support, regulation, routine, and unconditional love through some of life’s hardest seasons. Losing that bond can feel devastating, and that grief deserves to be honored.

In E41 - Grief, I share a personal reflection on loss, attachment, healing, and the profound connection between humans and animals. I hope this conversation resonates with your nervous system and reminds you that your grief is real and worthy of space.

Many people are highly trained to scan for danger.

Part of healing involves helping the nervous system notice something different.

A calm breath.
A safe connection.
A peaceful moment.
These are glimmers.

Small moments of safety that help retrain the nervous system over time.

Many women associate boundaries with guilt.
In reality, healthy boundaries help reduce chronic nervous system stress.

Every time you honor your limits, the body receives a different message:
Safety does not require self-abandonment.

Healing often begins there.

Many women with chronic stress and burnout were rewarded for ignoring themselves.

Being easy to care for.
Not expressing anger.
Not having too many needs.

The nervous system adapts to survive those dynamics.

Over time, self-abandonment can begin to feel normal.

Healing often means learning that your needs matter too.
