# # Reflections on the Summer Solstice: Planting Seeds of Intention
Today marks the Summer Solstice—the longest day of the year, a powerful moment when the sun appears to stand still. Historically, this has always been a sacred time for reflection, a day to pause, look at the world around us, and plant our deepest intentions for the future. On this day of maximum light, I want to plant a seed of hope.
I want to share a beautiful, grounding truth: a kinder, more honorable way of living isn't just a fantasy.
It is real, it is obtainable, and it is happening right now on this Earth.
Across the globe, entire societies have rewritten their laws to protect the waters, the animals, and one another, operating under beautiful guiding philosophies that we can all learn from.
Blueprints for Harmony
* Costa Rica & *Pura Vida* (Pure Life)
More than just a greeting, it is a national mindset of deep gratitude, community-driven care, and living in true harmony with nature. In 1948, they dismantled their military to fund healthcare and education. Today, they legally declare a clean environment a constitutional human right, protect water sources with fierce zoning laws, and pay local landowners to keep their forests standing.
* New Zealand & *Mauri* (Life Force):
The indigenous Māori people hold a profound truth: *"I am the river, and the river is me."* Guided by this connection, they successfully fought to grant full legal personhood to the Whanganui River and a massive forest ecosystem. These sacred spaces are no longer treated as "property"; they hold the same rights as human beings, protected by appointed guardians.
* Bhutan & Gross National Happiness (GNH):
High in the Himalayan mountains, Bhutan rejects financial wealth (GDP) as the sole measure of success, governing instead by Gross National Happiness and making environmental conservation a mandatory pillar. Their constitution mandates that at least 60% of the country must remain forested for all time, making them one of the only carbon-negative nations on earth. Their culture is beautifully rooted in the understanding that harming a mountain stream or an animal ultimately harms oneself.
Scandinavia & *Hygge* / *Talkoot*:** In the Nordic countries, societies are built around *hygge* (contentment and shared warmth) and *talkoot* (coming together as a neighborhood to do good work for the community). By lifting the crushing anxiety of basic survival through collective care, they ensure that social trust and empathy thrive.
Threading the Needle of Truth
Holding onto these bright examples is vital, because it can be so easy for our hearts to feel heavy when looking at the wider world. It is painful to look at history's deep wounds or modern-day disconnects—like the heart-wrenching culling of wild horses, or predator control policies that look more like domination than stewardship. When a mindset of control and destruction takes center stage, the world can feel overwhelming.
But these global blueprints remind us that darkness does not own the narrative.
My Solstice Intention
We might not be able to change a government's policy overnight, but we can bring that exact same spirit of stewardship to our own corners of the earth. The sanctuary of peace we provide for the animals in our care, the respect we show to our neighbors, and the kindness we offer to the land we walk on are quiet, powerful ways to make a meaningful difference.
Let's look at the world's pain- see it, feel it, send it love.. And choose to plant seeds of stewardship, integrity, and protection.
Gentle places do exist, and their spirit lives inside anyone who chooses kindness.
I have shared a few pictures I have taken, examples of what I try to focus my attention on.. to create space within my heart, to come back to my breath.. to pause, embrace, reflect, and to remember.. the light within.
Happy Solstice, everyone. Aho. Namaste
