April is World Autism Awareness Month. At Coast to Coast, Autism awareness, acceptance, and appreciation is everyday! We embrace where your child is at, and understand that everyone has different learning styles, sensory needs, and that’s ok! Knowing and understanding what your child’s learning style is, is an important and integral key to enhancing their development!

What a “ride” it’s been so far this year! Sharing a waterpark slide creation from one of our Coasters! During this activity we targeted airway/nasal breathing, executive functioning, problem solving, language/syntax, creativity, ideation, and the /r/ sound in target words. How cool and so much fun!

Overwhelmed by options, or wondering what your child would play with until next Christmas? Look no further. Coast to Coast would like to share our top 10 list of toys to consider gifting your child this holiday season. Please keep in mind toys and material items are not the best gift, instead it is the time you spend with your child! With that in mind, check out these suggestions and go play!

🎁 Pretend Play: Toy Farm (farm animals, tractor, barn) Doll House, (doll, chairs, bed) Toy Kitchen (pretend food, utensils)

🎁 Nesting toys,stacking blocks, Legos

🎁 Bubbles!

🎁 Sensory play and movement matters play/ toys: Play-Doh, kinetic sand, clay, blanket swings, trampoline, wobble board, Jacobs Ladder, sensory cushions, sensory balls, balance bike

🎁Dramatic Play/Pretend Play: dress up clothes and manipulative (conductor hat and train, doctor coat and doctor kit, chef hat/apron, astronaut suit/moon rocks, pretend tool box and tools)

🎁 Learning Tower/Kitchen Helper

🎁 Arts/Crafts: paint, stamp kit, stencil kit, artist easel, chalkboard/chalk, stickers

🎁 Pro tip: Try to avoid toys (including puzzles and books) that require batteries or produce sounds/music. Instead, invest in toy instruments like bells, drums, tambourin, egg shakers, harmoica, toy microphone, etc. and create music/sounds with your child. We want to encourage your child to produce words/sounds, not a toy. Better yet, produce and model animal sounds and exclamatory sounds during play schemas and joint book activities with them.

It’s easy to overlook receptive language delays with infants and toddlers. Oftentimes, parents are eagerly awaiting that first step or word not realizing other milestones may be missed. So, what is receptive language, and what should parents be mindful of in regards to this developmental domain?

👉🏻 Receptive language is understanding spoken language. Further, it is the ability to process information and react or respond accordingly. For example, your child looks at you when you say their name aloud, or your infant localizing to the sound of your voice or a familiar sound.

👉🏻 Coast to Coast would like to share this helpful visual from Integrated Learning Strategies that provides further examples of receptive language and when we can anticipate these skills to emerge.

We are big fans of The Hanen Center, and the valuable information they provide to families and the professionals who work with them. With that said, we at Coast to Coast would like to share this handout from them in regards to peer play. In addition, the handout provides a few suggestions on ways to encourage peer play in the classroom. As many of us prepare for a new school year we recognize the importance of peer modeling, peer learning, and peer play.
