❤️ Why We Look but Don’t "Listen" to Your Baby’s Heartbeat in the First Trimester ❤️

Seeing your baby’s heartbeat for the first time is an unforgettable moment! As Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (RDMS), our top priority is keeping your little one safe while getting those precious first views.

You might notice that during your very early ultrasound we map and measure the heartbeat visually on the screen, but we don’t turn on the audio for you to hear it.

Here is why:

•Safety First: Early ultrasounds use a method called B-mode (imaging) and M-Mode which uses incredibly low energy.

•The Doppler Difference: "Hearing" the heartbeat requires Pulsed Wave Doppler. This concentrates sound wave energy into a tiny, specific area.

•The ALARA Principle: We practice "As Low As Reasonably Achievable." Because early embryonic tissues are sensitive, medical guidelines recommend avoiding this concentrated energy during the first trimester of pregnancy.

•Seeing is Succeeding: We can accurately measure, count, and verify your baby's strong heartbeat purely by watching the screen and utilizing lower forms of thermal Index and Mechanical Index. Pulse Doppler is not necessary unless it is being utilized as a diagnostic tool.

WE KNOW you can't wait to hear that beautiful thumping sound. But I also know that if you knew the reasoning behind why we wait, you might make a different choice and every patient deserves knowledge behind why we do/don’t do certain things as Registered Sonographers. We are also medical professionals here with the knowledge, training and experience to protect you and your developing baby.

WHO PERFORMS YOUR ULTRASOUND MATTERS. 🤍

When you're expecting, it's easy to focus on the ultrasound machine, the beautiful images, or seeing your baby's face for the first time.
But there's something even more important:
Who is performing the examination?
A diagnostic ultrasound is more than taking pictures. A qualified sonographer knows what anatomy needs to be evaluated, which views need to be obtained, what measurements are required, and when something may need further evaluation.
That's why credentials matter.
For diagnostic ultrasound, the RDMS® (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) credential demonstrates that a sonographer has met specific education and clinical requirements and passed credentialing board examinations in sonography. For OB/GYN imaging, an RDMS with an OB/GYN specialty is specifically recognized by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM).
AIUM states that sonographers should be credentialed in the specialty areas in which they practice to support quality assurance and patient safety.
So before choosing where to have your ultrasound, ask:
🔹 Who is performing my ultrasound?
🔹 Are they credentialed? RDMS,RDCS,RVT?
🔹 What specialty are they registered in?
🔹 Do the hold additional certifications
🔹 Who reviews and interprets the examination?
🔹 What experience do they have?
Because when it comes to your health—and your baby—
the person behind the probe matters. 🤍
