The FDA has approved Lisraya (brepocitinib) for adults with dermatomyositis, a rare inflammatory disease that can cause muscle weakness and distinctive skin changes. The approval gives adults living with this condition a new treatment option and adds another targeted therapy to the treatment landscape for rare autoimmune diseases. The FDA lists the approval date as August 27, 2026.

The FDA has approved Imaavy, making it the first FDA-approved treatment specifically for warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA). The rare blood disorder occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys red blood cells. The new treatment targets part of the immune response involved in red blood cell destruction, giving patients with wAIHA a treatment option specifically developed for their disease.

The FDA has approved Tivicay PD, a new formulation of dolutegravir for treating HIV infection in newborns. The medicine is approved for infants weighing at least 3 kilograms, giving doctors another treatment option during one of the most vulnerable stages of life. The approval was posted by the FDA on August 25 and expands access to dolutegravir for newborn patients.

A new investigation is highlighting the human cost of hospice fraud in California, where some seniors were allegedly enrolled in hospice without fully understanding what was happening. In one case, a woman discovered that her identity had been used to list her as suffering from heart failure and receiving end-of-life care despite feeling healthy. California has become a major focus of the federal crackdown, with more than 1,000 hospices removed from Medicare since early 2025, according to the investigation.

More than $4 million in Medicaid payments are at the center of a new federal healthcare fraud case in Utah. Federal prosecutors have charged Jazzamin Clark, alleging that she submitted claims to Utah Medicaid for therapy services that were never provided, performed by unlicensed providers, or not covered by the program. Utah Medicaid allegedly paid more than $4 million on the claims. Clark is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

A former South Dakota home-care provider has been sentenced after admitting to submitting false claims to the state Medicaid program. Sharon Laraye Monson, former owner of At Home Nursing in Pierre, pleaded guilty to grand theft after authorities said she submitted fraudulent Medicaid claims between 2018 and 2024, causing more than $588,000 in losses. She received a 10-year suspended prison sentence, 10 years of probation, and was ordered to pay $500,000 in restitution.

A Kentucky medical biller has been indicted in an alleged Medicaid fraud and money-laundering scheme involving 10 behavioral-health providers. Prosecutors allege Jacqueline Sanders recruited people to establish behavioral-health businesses and then directed the submission of fraudulent Medicaid claims through those companies. Some of the allegedly fraudulent claims involved services supposedly provided to people who were incarcerated, hospitalized, or deceased. A Dallas-area medical clinic has agreed to pay $7.5 million to resolve federal allegations involving COVID-19 testing claims. Prosecutors alleged that Aymancare PLLC operated pop-up testing sites and billed a federal program for testing uninsured patients, while also submitting claims for medical evaluation services that allegedly were never provided. The settlement resolves the government’s civil allegations without a determination of liability.

A California hospice operator has pleaded guilty after prosecutors said her company billed Medicare for patients who did not meet the program’s terminal-illness requirement. Lynn Galbraith, a former hospice operator in Orange County, admitted to healthcare fraud involving more than $2.2 million in hospice claims. Medicare paid approximately $2.14 million on the claims, according to prosecutors. Galbraith faces up to 10 years in federal prison when she is sentenced in December.
