💛ABOUT ME & WHY I STARTED MOTHERS OF RECOVERY💛
Welcome to Mothers of Recovery Collective!
I'm Meg, a 30 year old mom to 2 kids, in recovery from alcohol & drug abuse, trauma including PTSD, mental health challenges, and a myriad of others.
Back in 2019, I got sober from alcohol after having TWO alcohol-withdrawal induced seizures within 6 months of each other (I was only 22 😭).
6 months later I got pregnant with my daughter and continued to stay sober, however I looked for no outside support or community in the recovery world and all my demons remained unacknowledged and unaddressed.
After having my daughter, I experienced severe postpartum depression and anxiety and still sought out no support or community.
Then around 8 months postpartum, one month shy of celebrating 2 years alcohol free, I relapsed, and remained "off-the-wagon" for another year and a half before finally getting sober again.
This time I took it upon myself to research sober/recovery support and communities and have been in recovery now for 3 YEARS 😊🫶
However, I know exactly how overwhelming and shameful it feels to find the right kind of support and community.
As mother in recovery herself from, I noticed a big gap in the recovery & mental health world when it came to mothers. People are quick to assume that you should be able to just quit a substance or get over a trauma or put your mental health on the back burner once you become pregnant and a mother. There is a deep shame that comes to us moms when we are struggling to quit a substance or struggling with our mental health during such a "happy" time in our lives. That shame and fear of judgment and/or being reported keeps mothers silently suffering and often leads to relapses & substance abuse increases, mental breakdowns, and su***de.
Moms in recovery need a safe space to connect with other moms alike who truly understand. A space where they can open up to someone/s they trust and be met where they are at. A reliable place where they can get the education, resources, and referrals they need to succeed in their recovery.
I believe by supporting & healing the mothers of the world, we are healing our kids 💛
