🚨 TRAINING BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK — TECC 🚨
Last weekend, our EMT students stepped outside the traditional classroom and into some hands-on, high-acuity training as they completed Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC) instruction.
TECC is more than a lecture. It combines in-depth classroom education with practical, hands-on skills designed to prepare EMS providers for some of the most challenging and stressful situations they could encounter.
Our students learned about the unique considerations involved in providing care during acts of violence, active threat situations, and active shooter incidents, including how EMS operations and patient care can change dramatically when the scene itself is not yet secure. This training places them directly into the “warm zone” which can easily turn back into the “hot zone.”
Through lecture, discussion, scenarios, and practical skills stations, students had the opportunity to put their knowledge into action while working through the challenges of providing lifesaving care in a high-stress environment. The students are placed into a “stack” with Law Enforcement to create the Rescue Task Force that goes into the Warm Zone to provide immediate tourniquet placement for bleeding control and then place the patient into the “recovery position”. This is what Rescue Task Force 1 does, which is followed by Rescue Task Force 2 for patient removal to a safe collection point. Once at the collection point, patients would receive a full assessment and any further care needed while waiting for transport.
This type of training forces students to think differently. It teaches them to recognize that in these situations, what we normally do, where we normally do it, and how we normally approach patient care may all have to change.
And that is exactly why we train.
Our goal isn't simply to teach students how to pass a test. It's to prepare them to become competent, adaptable EMS professionals who can think under pressure, work as a team, and provide the best care possible when their patients need them most.
💪 Train hard. Think critically. Work together. Be ready.
Because when the call is high acuity and the stakes are high, there is no substitute for preparation.
Another weekend of learning. Another step toward becoming the EMS providers our communities deserve. 🚑

**DISCLAIMER** ALL WEAPONS ARE SIMULATION, but are still treated as if they were real. The blood that you will also see is fake blood.

We would also like to thank all of the volunteers from MSP and those who portrayed victims!!!

There are certain moments as an instructor that make all the hours of teaching, training, preparing, correcting, pushing, and challenging your students completely worth it.

Last night was one of those moments. ❤️🚑

Awards in EMS are rare. And honestly, we don't do this job for awards. We do it because we have a responsibility to serve our communities, care for people when they need us most, and be ready to step forward when others may not know what to do.
But when someone is recognized for exceptional service, it means something.

And receiving that recognition as a student is even more rare.

So imagine how incredibly proud I am to say that THREE of our EMT students received Commendations of Merit for their actions during a Mass Casualty Incident.

Three students. Brian Forsyth, Maliki Anderson, and Lucas Wheeler.

Three people who stepped into an incredibly challenging situation and demonstrated the clinical judgment, teamwork, composure, and professionalism they have been working so hard to develop.

THIS is why we train the way we do.

This is why we practice until it feels repetitive.

This is why we challenge you when you're tired.

This is why we make you think through the why, not just memorize the what.

This is why we run scenarios over and over again.

Because someday, it won't be a classroom scenario.
Someday, it will be real.

And when that moment comes, our goal is for you to be ready.

Seeing three of our students recognized for their performance during a real MCI is one of those instructor moments that makes you stop and realize that the hard work is paying off.

To our three recipients: Congratulations on a very well-deserved Commendation of Merit. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves.

You didn't receive these awards because you are students. You received them because you showed up, stepped up, and performed when your community needed you.

And as your instructors, we couldn't be more proud to have been a small part of the journey that got you there.

Keep learning. Keep training. Keep pushing yourselves. Because this is exactly what all those hours of training are for. ❤️🚑

Proud doesn't even begin to cover it!

**STUDENT SPOTLIGHT x2**

Today we have a dynamic duo of a student spotlight!

Two of our Students are a Grandfather/Granddaughter team, Papa Brian and his granddaughter Emma!!!

This is what Emma has to say about growing up with her Papa and her journey into medicine!!!

Welcome to the EMS family!!!

“Medicine has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in our family’s assisted living home, I was always playing doctor with my Papa—although I think he would probably describe those little doctor “playdates” as torture. He was my first patient, my first injection, my first blood pressure, etc. What was probably horrifying for him was probably what built the foundation for the career I’m building today.

As I got older, that interest and playdates turned into a career. I became a medical assistant and continued school with the goal of eventually becoming a trauma physician. Nearing the end of my pre-reqs for medical school, I need more clinical experience. So when I learned CAAS was offering EMT classes just blocks from my childhood home and my current home, I knew I wanted to do it—and somehow convinced Papa to take the class with me. (Papa is a nurse so I’m happy he said yes I thought he would say no) Thankfully for him I’m a-lot more experienced now than I was 15 years ago😂 I’m hoping this experience I gain in EMS will give me valuable hands-on knowledge and help prepare me for my future career as a doctor, all while helping people and saving lives.

I love it here in this little world of EMS and I know papa does too. I hope one day I can make an impact on our community as greatly as my instructors and the paramedics and EMTs that I have met during my ride alongs. Someday, when I’m looking back at my time at CAAS and how my journey in EMS began, I’ll always be grateful that I got to start it right here at home and with my Papa. ❤️🚑

Our EMT-B students were able to get some hands-on experience with Extrication Training yesterday! We conducted a joint training day with The City of Owosso Fire Department so that our students would be able to see and feel what it is like during a vehicle extrication. Students took turns between being patients and crew members. This helps them to gain the knowledge and experience for when it comes to Motor Vehicle Accidents. This also gave them the patient’s perspective when it comes to the sounds and movements of a vehicle as Fire works to cut the vehicle apart to get the patient out and to safety.

Thank you City of Owosso Fire Department for letting our students be part of your training to help further their education and training!

Our EMT students are continuing their journey through trauma assessment, different types of injuries, and the appropriate care for each one. This weekend, the focus was on one of the most critical skills an EMT can perform in an emergency: bleeding control.
Students worked through the proper steps for controlling severe bleeding and practiced the use of:
🩹 Bandaging techniques
🩸 Wound packing
💪 Direct pressure
🩹 Pressure dressings
🚑 Tourniquet application
But learning these skills isn't just about reading a textbook or watching a demonstration. Our students got hands-on and put their skills to the test!
To better understand what it takes to properly apply a tourniquet, students practiced applying them to themselves and to their classmates. This gave them valuable experience with proper placement, application, and technique while also allowing them to experience what a patient may feel during the process.
And yes… tourniquets can hurt. A LOT. 😬
Understanding that discomfort firsthand helps our students better prepare for the conversations they may have with patients during a real emergency. When someone's life may depend on stopping severe bleeding, students will be able to confidently explain that while the tourniquet may be painful, its purpose is to save a life.
💙 Knowledge. Practice. Confidence. Compassion.
We're proud of the dedication our students are showing as they continue developing the skills they will need to provide safe, effective care when their communities need them most.
The classroom is where we practice. The goal is to be ready when it matters. 🚑🔥
And their faces say it all! From pain to making training fun and memorable!

Student Spotlight

This week's Student Spotlight is: Kezzie Dietz

"Ever since I was little, I've always wanted to work in the medical field because I've always loved helping people. I feel like I naturally gravitate toward careers where I can show compassion and be there for others, especially on their hardest days.
When I'm not busy with school or work, I enjoy reading and spending time with my family and friends. My ultimate goal is to become a paramedic, and just continue to help others through continuing my education."

If you are a local business owner, they are seeking donations for the raffle prizes. No donation is too big or too small, every little bit helps! This could be a gift card to your business, a service provided by your business, or it can be something completely different. Different ideas would be a basket of booze, snack basket, comfort basket, etc…

They are also looking for Sponsors! If you or your business would like to receive a commemorative brick that will be part of the permanent memorial, it is a $100 donation.
