Making space for everyone else but you is unsustainable. You can keep it up for a little bit, but it's a surefire way to burn out. The deep capacity for every version of your child can only come from the tolerance you have for yourself.

Parenting tip: What if we saw anger as the life force energy necessary for meeting needs and surviving?

Teach your child to trust themselves to solve the temporary problem at hand.

Fear of anger leads to forcing it stuck, whereas trusting that every frustration is safely solvable leads to releasing it clean.

What can my kid do when they're angry? What do I do when they're angry? Catch my full interview with WVUE FOX 8 where I share tips and answer these common parenting questions on my Youtube channel at Christina Carter Parenting.

When I was in elementary school, they had this rule that girls' shorts couldn't be shorter than their fingertips when their arms were at their sides.

When I stood there with my long arms at my side, the acceptable length for my shorts was almost to my knees. It was incredibly unflattering.

I wanted shorter shorts, which caused countless battles between me and my rule-following mom. The battles would always go something like...

Me: I don't want to wear those shorts.
Mom: You have to, they're not so bad, they look fine.
Me: Noooo they're ugly! It's not fair, everyone else's gets to be shorter.
Mom: Everyone's shorts are the same length as yours.. to their fingertips.
Me: Nuh-uh, mine is the longest!
Mom: You have to wear them, that's the rule!

And that lead to tears and helplessness for me, and frustration and defeat for my mom. Sound familiar?

The battles you have with your kids may not be about the length of their shorts, but I know you've probably had similar struggles over their outfits, lunches, hairstyles, or homework.

But my mama did something that created a turning point one day. She decided not to battle me. She decided instead to get curious and ask questions. And to just listen to how I was feeling without talking me out of it.

And for the first time, I was able to explore why wearing shorts to school was such a thorn in my side.

The long shorts I had to wear kinda made me feel like I looked like I was one of the boys. And I was afraid that if I looked like that, that I would get ridiculed and made fun of. And I wanted to avoid that at all costs, even if it meant breaking the rules.

My mom didn't go to the school and change the rules, and she didn't give in and let me wear shorter shorts. She simply made me feel heard and seen. And it eased my resistance.

And now that I face battles with my own daughter, I can lean in and listen, because often, that is the fixing.

Does listening alone fix all your child's struggles? No. But it's the first step to a solution, and sometimes you'll find that the solution was just listening.

Parenting tip: If you want better behavior and happier kids, discipline with connection... turn threats into reminders, give re-dos instead of demerits, turn timeouts into breaks, and punishments into privilege-earning. When kids feel connected, they behave better. How to do this? Catch my full interview with WVUE FOX 8 on my Youtube channel at Christina Carter Parenting.

Tired of fixing your child's behavior. Tired of fixing your parenting. Tired of researching. Tired of resisting what you don't like. It's exhausting from this place.

Your child's behaviors don't need to be fixed. They need to be understood. As communication. As indicators.

And the very first step is curiosity.

This slows down reaction time and can be the very thing that reduces reactivity.

You don't need to have a manual to decode every little thing they do. You just need to listen.

In the garage of our house, I had found myself... out of patience... and yelling.

In a cycle of my child not listening until I got angry.

Repeat nicely.
Repeat nicely.
Repeat nicely.
Explode.

So many of us wonder "how did I end up here?".

Even with the best intentions, it still happens.

Somewhere along the line, your child learned to tune you out until you lay down the hammer.

The truth is... after one or two times that your kids experience a heightened response from you, their threshold for the intensity increases.

Meaning they will tolerate more stimulation before their brain says they need to respond.

So, bigger reactions from you over time = lesser responses from them over time.

And this was the very thing that was happening for us.

My child wore a look of complete surprise once she saw that I had enough.

And because of this, and because of what I know, I knew this was creating confusion for her, so it was time to shift gears.

Your kid is not bad for doing this. And you are not a failure for creating this.

But having created this also means you have the power to change it.

•I went back to the basics of communication- short, simple instruction while having her attention.

•I used a firmness level that matches my child's desire for cooperation.

•And I threw in some play and replacement activities.

And things are way better, even after one time of this.

If you are having trouble with this in your home, you are not alone.

There's more that goes into this that really makes it successful.

Link in comments where I can help you break the yelling cycle and enjoy a more loving and collaborative relationship with your child 💛.

So many of us long for more patience with our kids.

If you think about it, the root of losing our cool is really our worry about the past or future, a lack of presence.

Trusting that everything works out...

That your needs always get met...

That your child is resilient.

A reminder I need often. But that always recenters me back to calm.

What does trust look like for you in stressful parenting moments?
