What an honor it was today to be invited to speak at the AFA Education around America tour in Providence. Such a great audience and program:

ABC7 news anchor Bill Ritter sat down at the desk he had anchored for 28 years and told his audience something he had been carrying privately for months.

He has Alzheimer's. Early stage. The treatments are keeping it at bay for now. But there is no cure. So that night would be his last broadcast.

His father had dementia too. He watched that disease move through his family for years. He already knows what this road looks like. When he got his own diagnosis, his first worry wasn't himself. It was his family.

That's the part that doesn't make the headlines. The family that didn't see it coming. The family that now has to figure out what to do next. The family that is doing this without a roadmap, and without anyone telling them what help is actually available.

There are millions of families living this right now. Some of them watched Bill's announcement and recognized themselves in his story. Not because they're famous, but because the disease doesn't care who you are.

If your family is one of them, there is a program called GUIDE built specifically for dementia caregivers that may be able to help. See the first comment to check your eligibility.

For millions of Americans living with dementia, a diagnosis slowly becomes a shrinking world. Fewer choices. Less spontaneity. More safety measures. Less living.

A new village in Madison, Wisconsin is building a different answer.

The Ellen & Peter Johnson Dementia Village at Agrace is the first of its kind in the United States, modeled after the internationally recognized Hogeweyk Dementia Village in the Netherlands, a community where people with dementia live in real houses on a real street, with real neighbors, and the freedom to decide how their day goes.

Eight houses. Eight residents each. A kitchen, a front porch, a bedroom of their own. Residents can cook their own meals, go on walks alone, skip an activity, or sleep in. No institutional hallways. No staff following them around. Just life.

Housemates are matched by lifestyle and interests. A day club welcomes 40 to 50 members who live at home but come in daily for activities and community. There's even on-site housing for healthcare students training in the field.

It opens fall 2027. The waitlist isn't even open yet.

This is what care looks like when it's designed around the person, not the disease. And it's about time.

Thank you for sharing your father’s talent, his charisma, and the love you had for each other. This was a true example of person centered care!!!! Your father will be greatly missed, but please let the story you have told continue. Your example is needed for all care partners.
I’m sending hugs and prayers for peace and comfort. I know his memory will be a blessing. Not only for you and your family but also to us, around the world. Thank you, and may peace be with you and your family.

I am devastated to share that my dear Dad, Teddy Mac – The Songaminute Man, passed away in the early morning of Friday, June 12.

I cannot begin to write how heartbroken I feel at his loss. Despite being frail the last few months, his last day was just a normal day with his normal routine. After tea, I got him to bed as usual, hugged him, “See you tomorrow Dad” and turned off the light.

If only I knew.

He was so loved by us all. We shall miss him dearly.

Thank you all so much for the support and love you’ve shown Dad and our family during the last 10 years. It has meant so much.
