It’s not unusual for parents to use a little bribe to get their child to eat at the dinner table or for good behavior.

In fact, food rewards (often a sweet or treat) are fairly commonplace in the parenting realm.

🐔 If you take another bite of chicken, you can have ice cream.
🍦Try it, and I’ll give you a treat.
🍭 Be good and you can have a sucker.

Time and time again, parents do this in order to get their kids to eat better or to eat healthier foods.

But do they work?

Incentives to eat are effective.

In the short term, anyway.

Typically, when you use a food reward, you’ll see an immediate result: a child who eats more, tries a new food, eats a “healthy” food, or who demonstrates good behavior.

In kids, treats are an easy incentive.

What are the potential long-term consequences?

One study suggests…

“Parents’ use of food as a reward at age 4 years predicted emotional overeating and picky eating at age 9 years.”

As the new school year starts, now is the perfect time to schedule your child's ADHD follow-up appointment if one is due. 📅 We typically see our patients with ADHD every 3 to 6 months, depending on their individual needs, and staying on schedule helps ensure your child is set up for success when classes begin. ⭐

If your child needs an ADHD medication refill, please call our office well in advance to submit your request. 📞 These medications require careful review and cannot always be processed same-day and may require an appointment, so please avoid waiting until the last minute. ⏰ Planning ahead helps us help your child start the school year on the right foot! 🏫💙
