Swadhyaya (svah-DHYAH-yah), self-study — not fixing yourself, just watching yourself honestly, without judgment.

Route 3 near the studio is unpredictable these days. A 20-minute drive can turn into an hour with zero warning, and for a long time, our only response was gripping the wheel and getting grumbly about it. Then we noticed we had a choice about what to do with ourselves while we sat there.

Now we look. A pollinator garden we'd never have seen without being stuck long enough to notice the sign. A cut tree limb shaped like a heart. The sky.

The traffic doesn't change. We do.

Tapas (TAH-pahs) is friction produced by going against the grain the willingness to feel uncomfortable on purpose. This month, we've explored it as repetition that reshapes the brain, the discipline of true rest, and persistence: the stream that wears down the rock, not through force, but by simply showing up again and again.

This week, closing out National Healthy Aging Month, an important caution. Tapas isn't meant to burn you out; it's meant to build you up. If a practice leaves you depleted instead of strengthened, that's a sign to adjust, not push harder.

Bamboo spends years building roots underground before it ever breaks the surface. Then it grows faster than almost any plant on Earth. The invisible effort was never wasted.

This week: take stock of whatever fire you're tending. Is it building you up, or wearing you down?

Tapas (TAH-pahs) is often translated as austerity, or right effort. This week, we're looking at it not as force, but as persistence.

There's an old saying: "In the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins not through strength, but through persistence." The stream doesn't grit its teeth or muscle through. It just keeps arriving, day after day, in the same place, until the rock eventually changes because of it.

My own practice moves like that. Some mornings it feels like reuniting with an old friend. Other mornings, it feels closer to punishment, something I have to talk myself into. Lately, more mornings are landing in the first category not because anything dramatic changed. Still, because I kept showing up for it anyway, even on the mornings it felt like punishment too.

Life rarely unfolds the way we plan it first thing in the morning. If you miss the class you meant to take, or the practice you meant to do, see if you can return to it anyway tomorrow, later today, in a different form — rather than letting one missed moment become the whole story.

That return, again and again, is the persistence tapas is really asking for.

Swami Kriaplu often said: "There is no wasted effort when it comes to practice. Even a little pracitce will bring you closer to your goals."

Tapas (TAH-pahs) usually gets mistaken for pushing the body as hard as it can go. This week, we're exploring the opposite: what it actually takes to let yourself rest.

Here's the thing about stillness — your mind doesn't trust it. The ego feels safe when it's busy, productive, distracted. So the moment you actually stop moving, whatever you've been outrunning has room to catch up with you. Staying still instead of reacting, fixing, or getting up to do one more thing takes real strength.

This is exactly what tapas looks like in restorative yoga and yoga nidra. Neither one asks you to work harder. Restorative yoga fully supports the body so it can release. Yoga nidra guides you into the space between waking and sleeping so the nervous system can finally downshift. The tapas isn't in the pose — it's in staying present through the stillness instead of escaping it.
So many of us find it hard just to sit and do nothing no phone, no TV, no music to fill the space. Just silence. Tapas, here, is staying in that silence anyway.

"Silence isn't the absence of sound," writes Ravi Ravindra it's a state of being, one that draws us a little closer to the heart.

This week: try Constructive Rest Pose link in the comments. Start with three minutes, add a minute or two each day, and build up to ten. Strength isn't only built through effort — it's built in the pauses, too.

Learning anything new takes repetition. No skill develops with a one-and-done.

In our 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training, trainees practice the same posture sequence... over and over... week after week... for nine months straight. At first it's clunky: checking alignment, repeating Sanskrit names to remember them. By the end, the sequence doesn't live in their head anymore. It lives in their body.

That's not a coincidence; it's neuroscience.

Every time you repeat something, you strengthen the neural pathway behind it. Neurons that fire together, wire together.

And here's the good part: this doesn't stop as we age! Our brains stay capable of building new pathways throughout our whole lives, if we keep giving them reason to.

Tomorrow is the New Moon, traditionally a time for planting seeds. Fitting, since repetition is exactly that: a small seed, tended daily, that eventually becomes something sturdy.

This week:
Choose one small thing a stretch, a breath practice, a kind phrase to yourself and repeat it the same way, every day. Not because one repetition changes you. Because you're laying down a path your brain will remember.

Make it a GREAT day on purpose!
