What an incredible way to kick off Child Passenger Safety Month! 🎗️🚙🥳

Yesterday, we hosted our first of many Car Seat Safety Events in LaPorte, IN, and it was a HOT one! 🔥☀️ Let’s just say the temperatures were giving us a little extra practice in keeping things cool! 😅

A huge thank you to all the families who braved the heat and stopped by! We had 12 families join us. Our certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians completed 15 car seat checks and provided 13 car seats to families in need. Every seat checked, every adjustment made, and every question answered helps create a safer ride for children in our community. 👶🚙✨

Thank you for trusting us with your family’s safety and for helping us start Child Passenger Safety Month off strong! Together, we’re making every trip a safer one — even when the parking lot feels like a frying pan! 😂☀️

FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS:
Join us for our annual Public Safety & Community Day event at Central Park on September 19th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
It is a fun (FREE) day in the park for the community to engage with our first responders, non-profit agencies, and local businesses!

VENDORS:
If you are interested in being a vendor, this event is a fantastic opportunity to engage with the community, promote public safety, and showcase the amazing services offered by local vendors like you (no food or beverage vendors will be permitted).

Our goal is to bring together community members, local organizations, and public safety professionals for a fun, educational, and interactive day. We are looking for vendors who can provide resources, services, demonstrations, or giveaways to help make this event enjoyable and informative for all ages!

As a vendor, you will have the opportunity to connect directly not only with other businesses but also with members of the community.

August is Overdose Awareness Month.

Let’s stand together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and save lives. Knowing the signs of an overdose could save a life.

Some signs of an overdose include:
· Loss of consciousness
· Unresponsive to outside stimulus
· Awake but unable to talk
· Breathing is very slow, irregular, or has stopped
· Very pale or clammy skin

What to Do if You Suspect an Overdose:
· Call 911 immediately
· Administer naloxone if available
· Try to keep the person awake and breathing
· Lay them on their side to prevent choking
· Stay with them until help arrives

Every second counts. Your awareness could save a life.

The School City of Hammond Department of Food & Nutrition is proud to support our students and families with convenient Grab & Go Meal Distribution. 🥪 🍎 🥛 Every child ages 18 and under can receive both breakfast and lunch together in a single, quick visit. Please note that students must be present to receive meals.

Convenient Drive-Through. There is no need to get out of your car. 🚙 Simply drive up to the designated door at any participating location listed below, and our staff will hand meals directly to your vehicle for a quick and safe pickup. 🍎 🥪

🚨 IMPORTANT SAFETY ALERT 🚨

Our crews have recently responded to an increased number of emergency calls related to generator misuse. Portable generators are great backup options during power outages, but improper use can quickly lead to deadly Carbon Monoxide (CO) poisoning, electrocution, or severe fires.
Please take a moment to review these critical generator safety tips to protect your family and neighbors:

🏡 1. Location is Everything
20-Foot Rule: Always keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home.
Outdoors Only: NEVER operate a generator inside a garage, home, shed, or enclosed space, even with doors/windows open.
Keep Clear: Ensure 3–4 feet of clear space above and around all sides for proper ventilation, and direct exhaust away from doors, windows, and vents.

⚡ 2. Safe Electrical Use
Use Heavy-Duty Cords: Always use grounded, damage-free extension cords rated for the total wattage being used.
GFCI Protection: Use GFCI outlets or adapters to prevent electrical shock.
Plug Direct: Plug appliances directly into the generator or use a heavy-duty cord. NEVER plug a generator directly into a home wall outlet—this causes dangerous "backfeeding," which can electrocute utility workers and neighbors.
Keep Dry: Never operate a generator in wet conditions or rain without proper cover designed for generators. Always let it cool before refueling!

💀 3. Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety
Carbon Monoxide is an invisible, odorless killer that can be fatal in as little as 5 minutes.

Symptoms to Watch For:
🌀 Dizziness
🤕 Headaches
🤢 Nausea
😴 Unexplained fatigue or sleepiness
Working Alarms: Ensure you have working CO detectors outside sleeping areas and on every level of your home.

⚠️ If you suspect CO poisoning or experience symptoms: Get to fresh air immediately, do NOT re-enter the building, and call 911 right away!
