Beautiful morning for our monthly Walk with a Doc! The threat of a rainy walk kept some away but we ended up not seeing a drop of rain and we all enjoyed wonderful conversation afterward at Steamwhistle Coffee Roasters!

Today we spoke about the foundation of health which starts with healthy foods, quality sleep, and adequate physical activity. When we strive to maximize all of these, we can be confident that we are doing what we can to maintain our health.

We hope to see you next month back at our normal walking location, Lake County Fairgrounds. We will meet on Saturday, September 12th at 9am. Please come and join us for some steps!

Our walk was a bit warm but we all enjoyed some time at Lemon Lake County Park. 🍋

Today we spoke about skin cancer. Did you know that 1 out of 5 people will get cancer by 70 years of age?

While we are all at risk, here are some that may be at higher risk:

* individuals with fair or freckled skin👩‍🦰
* History of sunburns
* Frequent UV exposure (from the sun or tanning beds)☀️
* Live in a sunny or high altitude climate
* Family history of skin cancer

What can we do to protect ourselves?

* Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 even on cloudy days and reapply when swimming or sweating.
* Wear a hat or sun protective clothing
* Avoid tanning beds
* Stay in the shade as much as possible⛱️
* Regularly check your skin for new and changing spots

When checking your skin, look for the ABCDEs
* A : Asymmetry (one half doesn’t match the other)
* B : Border (irregular, jagged, or blurred borders)
* C : Color (uneven or multicolored moles)
* D : Diameter (is the area > 6mm)
* E : Evolving (is the spot changing size, shape, or color) Another E is check those ears!!!

Have your roommate, spouse, friend check the areas you can’t see. If you are concerned, reach out to your primary care physician or local dermatologist. A yearly skin exam is an important step to take in maintaining a healthy lifestyle!

Come join us for a quick walk. Get out and get those steps today. Make sure you have the proper footwear, light breathable clothing if the weather is hot, and bring your water so you stay hydrated. See you next month at Lemon Lake County Park.

March and April brought two more Healthy cooking classes. We all enjoyed learning how to make Shepherds Pie and Chicken and Lentils. Both were delicious. We look forward to more classes this fall.
