I’ve been stuck with this thought..
as I watch our journey unfold, ya know… just fu***ng around and finding out in the educational world…

Intuitively I knew the system was broken.
How broken??
Shouldn’t exist in the first place broken?? Maybe!?

Maaan… idk- is that too far??

I’m just saying..
NEVER in the HISTORY of humanity.. for over 200,000 years has a family dropped their child off to be raised by an unrelated stranger.

For over 200,000 years- children learned from living alongside their families.
Their learning happened from parents, relatives, community members, elders.. the land itself… they watched adults work, and practiced alongside them.

So for children to spend majority of their days- M-F with unrelated adults- in an institutional building- hasn’t happened in human history - this is a new development.
This is not a natural learning process.

The big shift happened in the 1800s… guess why?! You know why… you should know why….
It was industrialization.
Industrialization pulled people away from homes.

Suddenly children weren’t learning how to live off the land from direct relationship with their families - they were handed off.. to the factory school model.
Which mirrored the M-F work week..
it was to train them up to be good workers..

Humans have institutionalized childhood.

And it’s wrong to do.

We’ve forgotten how to live in community. With the land. With each other. We’ve forgotten what it’s like to be our own human.

Our food has less nutrition than just 50-60 years ago.
Our relationships are more fragile than ever. Parents hardly know their children. For many the relationship is compressed to this:
wake up-rush-drop off- pick up-homework-bedtime..d it again tomorrow.
Peers became who children identified with- peers are the dominant social force.. imagine that.. a 5 year old looking to another 5 year old for approval.. or a 13 year old looking to another 13 year old for approval.. Can anything good come out of this???
Families became more isolated- we used to eat together. Sit together. Commune together..

Living used to be LIVING..
But now- it’s consuming and surviving.

We used to be able to live off the land- without being dependent on a paycheck.
Without being dependent on grocery stores.
Work was meaningful- because when we did, we contributed to our tribe.

Anywho….

My question is… why the f**k are we still playing this game??

M-F school does not make sense. Separating families from their children does not make sense.
Separating ourselves from our neighbors does not make sense. Managing children’s time between school, sports, and work… DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.

What the heck are we doing????

I don’t have any answers..
I just know what feels wrong.
And what feels right.

This whole “drop your child off and go” — fundamentally, on a core soul level, feels wrong.

Humanity needs to course correct.

Unlearning compliance is healing work.

Many of us were taught to be obedient before we were taught to trust ourselves. To stay quiet, follow directions, and not question authority.

But when adults begin healing that conditioning, something powerful shifts. We stop expecting children to shrink themselves to make adults comfortable.

And we begin raising conscious children—children who think, question, and trust their voice.

If you feel that pull to do this work, we invite you to step into it with us. The healing we do as adults shapes the world our children inherit.

This is a pic of a high note…it’s after we conquered the gnarliest widow maker!!

Buuuut—you know—it ain’t always like that. Don’t let social media fool you. This s**t is hard!

And… Moments like this truly bless me with that “yeah, we’re doing this right” energy.

Learning never ends.
I spend a lot of time studying human psychology, human development, human consciousness, spirituality… I read, I research, I collect information…
And that’s just a sliver of what actual learning is.

Right now, I’m in one of those frustrating learning moments at my school.
I know what the research says about development. I’ve seen the studies. I’ve heard the ideals.
But actually experiencing them with these children? That’s an entirely different ball game.

I study the act of learning and thinking often. I know the processes, the stages. And still, when I hit the confusing stage—or the out-of-control trial-and-error stage—I get tangled in the emotional drama:
“I expected more from myself… I should have known better… I hate making mistakes…”
And yet, I have to remind myself—all mistakes are part of learning.
It doesn’t end when you become an adult—especially not when you’re an advocate of lifelong learning like me.

We’re only in year two of our school. If year 0–1 was birth—vision clear, excitement high—then year two is toddlerhood. Boundaries are tested. Things are a wobbling!
The learning place I imagined … is now bumping into real-life families, real-life children, with real-life problems, traumas, and dysregulated nervous systems.

And I remind myself…
I am learning too, and I have to give myself grace.
We are all learning, and we all have to give ourselves grace.

Check out our journey…
We have blended mixed ages—that isn’t in our educational blueprint that was hijacked by the machine.
We are learning in nature, in all weather—that isn’t in our blueprint that the machine gave us.
We are nurturing the soul—that, for damn sure, isn’t in the machine’s blueprint.
We’re not just helping families raise children—we’re helping raise family consciousness, guiding them to become more intentional about living in this world.

The Restoration of the Guide: Healing the Spirit of Teaching-

“Burnout is not a personal failure; it is a predictable response to prolonged misalignment. Intergenerational education begins with a radical premise: before we can liberate children from inappropriate systems, we must first restore the spirit of teaching itself.”

~Shayleen Halloran, Intergenerational Education: How we become the ancestors our children need.

I wanted to share a story that happened earlier this week! I did some energy work with a learner at my school, and it was REALLY REALLY neat.
If you have any relationship with a person that has ADD or ADHD, this might be a worthy tool to pull from!!

The other day during reading time, a learner made a funny monkey sound.
He was sent out of the room for being disruptive.

I happened to be walking toward the room as it happened, so I went to connect with him.

I asked why he was away from the group.
He told me he made a sound he “shouldn’t have.”

I could already feel the energy in him—and something in me said, slow this down.
So I asked him to tune into his body.

This is something I do in my healing work with adults, and I trusted it would translate.

I guided him to close his eyes and feel his body from his head down to his toes.
Then I asked him to notice where that monkey sound lived in his body.

Before he answered, I could feel it too.

“It’s in my heart,” he said.
“It feels like a tickle.”

That made sense—to both of us.
I let him know that I understand tickles can be both funny and uncomfortable at the same time.. so it would maken sense to want to get that out!

I asked him to stay with it for a moment. Just notice it. No fixing. No stopping.

And then something beautiful happened.
We both felt it soften… and disappear.

What we realized together was simple and profound:
that part of him just wanted attention.
It was his attention deficit showing up! Get it!?!

Instead of shaming an impulsive moment or labeling it as “bad behavior,” we worked with the energy.
He learned that something he thought was uncontrollable could actually be listened to, understood, and guided.

That is empowerment.
