I’ve been stuck with this thought..
as I watch our journey unfold, ya know… just fu***ng around and finding out in the educational world…
Intuitively I knew the system was broken.
How broken??
Shouldn’t exist in the first place broken?? Maybe!?
Maaan… idk- is that too far??
I’m just saying..
NEVER in the HISTORY of humanity.. for over 200,000 years has a family dropped their child off to be raised by an unrelated stranger.
For over 200,000 years- children learned from living alongside their families.
Their learning happened from parents, relatives, community members, elders.. the land itself… they watched adults work, and practiced alongside them.
So for children to spend majority of their days- M-F with unrelated adults- in an institutional building- hasn’t happened in human history - this is a new development.
This is not a natural learning process.
The big shift happened in the 1800s… guess why?! You know why… you should know why….
It was industrialization.
Industrialization pulled people away from homes.
Suddenly children weren’t learning how to live off the land from direct relationship with their families - they were handed off.. to the factory school model.
Which mirrored the M-F work week..
it was to train them up to be good workers..
Humans have institutionalized childhood.
And it’s wrong to do.
We’ve forgotten how to live in community. With the land. With each other. We’ve forgotten what it’s like to be our own human.
Our food has less nutrition than just 50-60 years ago.
Our relationships are more fragile than ever. Parents hardly know their children. For many the relationship is compressed to this:
wake up-rush-drop off- pick up-homework-bedtime..d it again tomorrow.
Peers became who children identified with- peers are the dominant social force.. imagine that.. a 5 year old looking to another 5 year old for approval.. or a 13 year old looking to another 13 year old for approval.. Can anything good come out of this???
Families became more isolated- we used to eat together. Sit together. Commune together..
Living used to be LIVING..
But now- it’s consuming and surviving.
We used to be able to live off the land- without being dependent on a paycheck.
Without being dependent on grocery stores.
Work was meaningful- because when we did, we contributed to our tribe.
Anywho….
My question is… why the f**k are we still playing this game??
M-F school does not make sense. Separating families from their children does not make sense.
Separating ourselves from our neighbors does not make sense. Managing children’s time between school, sports, and work… DOES NOT MAKE SENSE.
What the heck are we doing????
I don’t have any answers..
I just know what feels wrong.
And what feels right.
This whole “drop your child off and go” — fundamentally, on a core soul level, feels wrong.
Humanity needs to course correct.
