Often, I am asked by customers, "Where is Cuba, MO?" I tell them we are a town of approximately 3300 people, about an hour and a half West of St. Louis. Historic Route 66 runs straight through the middle of town and you can see numerous pieces of our history displayed on various buildings in the form of murals. We are the Route 66 Mural City.
One of those murals depicts the Blue Bonnet. During W.W. II the Blue Bonnet, a Frisco train, came through town to carry our soldiers to far off places in service of their country, my Great Uncles included. At that time, the population of Cuba was about 1000 people. I have a letter written to one of my Uncles from his best friend’s mother. She talks about how it was difficult looking through town and seeing nothing but young boys and old men. W.W.II took the life of six soldiers who left Cuba on the Blue Bonnet. They are memorialized on the 'Gold Star Boys' mural.
In celebration of Memorial Day, we would like to share with you a bit of history about one of our hometown Gold Star Boys. He was a friend to my grandmother who was a co-founder of G&W.
Yeoman Third Class Lawrence E. Grant, who joined the U.S. Navy from Cuba, Missouri, was aboard the USS Arizona on the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor. He is among the 900+ lost souls still onboard the ship. Today, Yeoman Third Class Grant is memorialized on the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
