It Is the Smallest, Hairiest, and Most Ancient Rhino Alive — a Shy, Singing Survivor of the Ice Age That Once Roamed From the Himalayas to Borneo. Today Perhaps Only 34 to 47 Sumatran Rhinos Remain on Earth, So Scattered Through the Forest That Many Will Never Find a Mate. Time Is Almost Gone.

This rhino is closer to a woolly rhino than to the rhinos most people picture. And it is slipping away in near silence.

Dicerorhinus sumatrensis is a forest rhino of Sumatra and Borneo, covered in coarse reddish hair, no bigger than a large pony. It is the last surviving relative of the Ice Age woolly rhino.

THE NUMBERS:
The situation is dire (IUCN):
— Likely just 34–47 individuals remain in the wild
— Survivors are split into tiny, isolated forest pockets
— Habitat has been cleared for palm oil, logging, and farmland
— With animals so few and so far apart, many simply never meet to breed

THE SINGING RHINO:
Despite its plight, it is strangely charming — nicknamed the "singing rhino" for an unusually rich range of whistles, whines, and whale-like vocalisations used to communicate through dense forest.

The last hope now rests largely on a semi-wild breeding programme at Way Kambas in Sumatra, where carefully managed pairs have produced a handful of precious calves. For this species, captivity may be the only bridge back.

When an animal grows so rare that loneliness itself becomes its main threat, is protecting habitat still enough — or does survival now depend on us physically bringing the last few together?
