Before we dive into tips, let’s talk mindset. Googling “birth tearing” and other birth related topics at 2am can turn into a spiral. The internet is full of worst-case stories, random hacks, and info that isn’t true. That fear tightens your body, and a tight body struggles more. Keep your prep calm. Your body will thank you in labor.

1️⃣ Lubricate with vitamin E oil
Ask your provider: “Do you have vitamin E oil, or should I bring my own?” A little oil during pushing helps tissues glide and stretch. You can also start gentle perineal massage with oil in pregnancy. Just a few minutes of practice a day can make a big difference.

2️⃣ Warm compress while baby descends
Have your provider hold a warm, wet washcloth with soft pressure against your perineum as baby’s head comes down. The heat softens the tissue so it can stretch more easily. Most hospitals keep these ready for you.

3️⃣ “Candle” breathing at crowning (most important IMO)
This is the big one. When baby’s head is emerging, slow way down. Pause the strong pushes. Take tiny breaths like you’re blowing out candles on a birthday cake (how appropriate 😆). This gives your perineum time to stretch slowly as baby is born. Slow and gentle wins here.

⭐️ Remember: your body knows what to do!
Tearing isn’t something to fear. Your body is designed to stretch and do exactly what’s needed to let your baby pass through. About 96% of women have no tear or just a small, superficial one. Only around 3-4% have more significant tearing. Most tissue heals beautifully; so don’t forget you were made for this!

Jackie and Matt’s road to meeting Lily was long; two full days of a strenuous induction, of waiting, of finding reasons to laugh when the hours stretched thin.

In a quiet moment between contractions, I turned to their nurse and joked, “Have you ever accidentally caught a baby because the provider got here too late?”
She smiled and shook her head: “No, and I hope I never have to!”

Be careful what you put into the universe! 🤭

When Jackie’s body finally said it was time to push, she was a force. Steady, powerful, utterly in command. After everything her body had been through, she blew me away. One push, then another, and suddenly Lily’s head was already here…no midwife yet, no doctor in sight.

So we did the only thing we could do. We moved together. The nurse caught Lily’s head and shoulders, and my hands were right there with hers, helping guide that sweet girl earthside just moments before the midwife rushed through the door.

And Jackie and Matt? They never wavered. Through two days of uncertainty, they kept their humor and their love at the center of the room. It’s how they labored. It’s how they parent already.

Welcome earthside, Lily. You were worth every hour, every laugh, every push. And you’ve got the most joyful, resilient parents ready to show you the world.

I can’t believe we’re already halfway through 2026. Time moves differently when you’re witnessing life begin, over and over again.

I’m deeply honored by every woman and family who has welcomed me into their birth space this year. Holding your stories, your strength, your tender first moments - it’s sacred work I never take lightly.

As we move into the second half of the year, I have just 5 birth doula spots remaining for September through November. If your due date falls in this window and you’ve been wondering if we’re a fit, don’t wait - I’d LOVE to chat! Once they’re full, my birth calendar closes for 2026.

If you’re still dreaming of a supported, informed birth…I’m also booking birth planning sessions, postpartum planning sessions, and private childbirth education through the end of the year. Different kinds of support, same heart.

I’m part of the team, but he’s her anchor. As a doula, I guide breath, suggest positions, and protect the room. I provide emotional, physical, and educational support. But I’ll never replicate the oxytocin his presence creates.

When she’s sick, grieving, or undone by a hard day, who does she reach for? Him. His voice. His arms. His familiar calm.

Birth isn’t different. It’s the most vulnerable, primal moment of all. So I don’t replace partners, I gently guide them. I bolster the team she already chose, helping him show up as the safety she already knows.

Because when he is regulated, she can release. And that’s when oxytocin flows.

Partners: did anyone teach YOU how to show up in the birth room? Or were you just told to “be supportive”? Drop a 🙋‍♂️ if you want my 7-step partner guide.
