Does it feel like your child can never fully settle into the moment?

Even during:

movie nights
family vacations
fun outings
dinners
activities they’re supposed to enjoy

…their brain still seems somewhere else.

For many kids with ADHD and anxiety, it’s not that they don’t care or don’t want to be present.

Their nervous system is constantly scanning:
“What am I forgetting?”
“What’s next?”
“Am I in trouble?”
“What should I be doing?”

And over time, the brain can get stuck in overdrive.

So what looks like:

distraction
irritability
emotional shutdown
“checking out”

…is often a nervous system that doesn’t know how to slow down and fully feel safe in the moment.

Hi, I’m Erin Badour, Speech Pathologist and Neurofeedback Specialist.

I help parents understand what’s actually happening underneath these patterns so behavior starts making more sense — and children can be supported differently.

The child who falls apart at home may actually be the child working the hardest all day long.

Parents often feel confused because teachers may say:
“They were perfectly fine at school.”

But home is where safety lives.
And safety is where overload often shows up.

Understanding that changes the way families respond.

Many high-functioning adults are running on compensation patterns they don’t even recognize anymore.

They’ve learned how to push through.
Mask.
Overwork.
Adapt.

But underneath it, their brain and nervous system may still be struggling.

And eventually the exhaustion catches up.

A struggling child often becomes a struggling family.

Not because parents are failing.
Because most families are trying to solve a nervous system issue with more pressure, more punishment, or more frustration.

And that usually creates even more exhaustion for everyone involved.

There are reasons behaviors happen.
And sometimes understanding the “why” changes everything.

“If they can focus on video games for hours… why can’t they focus on homework?”

Because that’s not actually how the ADHD brain works.

Many kids with ADHD CAN focus extremely well - especially when something is stimulating, rewarding, novel, fast-paced, or highly engaging.

That’s why video games can hold attention for hours.

But homework, routines, chores, organization, and multi-step tasks often require a completely different type of brain engagement:
• sustained mental effort
• planning
• delayed reward
• internal motivation
• executive functioning

And for many ADHD kids, that can feel incredibly draining.

So at home, parents may see:
procrastination
emotional meltdowns
unfinished work
lost assignments
forgetfulness
constant reminders
what looks like “selective attention”

But underneath the behavior is often a nervous system and brain struggling to regulate attention, motivation, and engagement.

And understanding the brain behind the behavior changes the conversation completely.

Hi, I’m Erin Badour, Speech Pathologist and Neurofeedback Specialist.
I help parents understand what’s actually happening underneath these patterns - so children can be supported differently, not just corrected constantly.

This is work I do every day with families - helping parents better understand regulation, executive functioning, attention, and brain-based support strategies.

You learned to function.
You never learned to regulate.

And those are two very different things.

A lot of high-functioning adults are carrying enormous nervous system strain underneath their productivity.

Because performing well externally does not automatically mean the brain and body feel regulated internally.

That’s why so many adults feel exhausted even when they appear successful from the outside.

Hi, I’m Erin Badour, Speech Pathologist and Neurofeedback Specialist.
I help adults understand these patterns differently - so they can stop confusing survival with true regulation.

This is the work I do every day in my clinics - helping people understand and regulate these patterns at the level of the brain.

Your child is not ignoring you.
Their brain may already be overloaded before you even speak.

A lot of children who appear distracted, avoidant, or “checked out” are actually processing more stimulation than people realize.

And when the nervous system becomes overloaded…

Listening becomes harder.
Processing slows down.
The brain starts prioritizing survival over regulation.

Your brain is not “broken.”
It adapted to survive stress for a very long time.

That’s a very different conversation.

Because when a nervous system spends years in chronic stress or overactivation, the brain adapts around survival.

And over time…

Being constantly “on” starts to feel normal.

Even when the stress is no longer there.

Your child is not choosing to be defiant.
A lot of what looks like “bad behavior” is actually a nervous system stuck in survival mode.

And that changes the way we need to look at it.

Because when a child’s system feels overwhelmed or threatened, the reaction happens fast.
Before the thinking brain has time to step in.
Before logic can slow it down.
Before they can regulate what’s happening internally.

And over time…
That starts to look like attitude.
Defiance.
“Not listening.”
But most of the time, it’s not intentional the way people think it is.

You were called “high functioning.”
What if you were just surviving well?

A lot of adults who appear successful externally are carrying enormous internal strain.
Because when a nervous system learns to survive by overperforming…
It can look very functional from the outside.
Until eventually the exhaustion catches up.
