Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of welcoming Connor, his dad Chris, and Connor's girlfriend's dad Richard aboard Reel Therapy Sportfishing for a short yellow perch trip!

All three gentlemen were seasoned fishermen, which always puts a little extra pressure on the captain to produce! šŸ˜‚ Fortunately for me, these guys were more interested in enjoying the experience, spending time together, and bending a few rods than filling a cooler. That took a little pressure off my shoulders!

The yellow perch bite has been anything but consistent this year, and Saturday was no exception. We had to work for every fish, but by the end of the trip, we managed to put 31 keeper perch in the cooler, along with another 75ā€“100 short perch that were safely released to grow a little bigger and hopefully make their way back into someone's cooler another day!

While the numbers weren't quite what I had hoped for, the company and conversation more than made up for it. Sometimes a successful day on the water isn't measured by how many fish you bring home, but by the memories made along the way.

A big thank-you to Connor, Chris, and Richard for choosing Reel Therapy Sportfishing! It was a pleasure having you gentlemen aboard, and I'm already looking forward to hosting you again next summer when we trade in the perch rods and go chasing some Lake Erie walleye! Hopefully, those fish will be a little more cooperative! šŸ˜‚šŸŽ£

Tuesday afternoon, I headed out for a shorter trip with four gentlemen who were in town for a corporate retreat.

Unfortunately, the perch weren't nearly as interested in participating as we were! Despite covering some water and trying just about everything I could think of, we struggled to find any active fish.

We managed to put 7 keeper perch in the cooler while sorting through another 20 shorts. Certainly not the kind of numbers I was hoping to send these guys home with!

To top it off, I was so busy trying to find fish that I completely forgot to snap a single picture. šŸ“øšŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

That's fishing, though! Some days you're the hero, and other days the fish make sure you stay humble. šŸ˜‚

Wellā€¦ today was a first for Reel Therapy Sportfishing. I had a customer pull a no-call/no-show. šŸ˜¬

I sent texts, messages, and left a voicemail, but never heard a word back. After waiting around for about an hour, I figured I might as well make the best of the situation. I called a buddy, and since I was already invested with a livewell full of emerald shiners and a cooler full of ice, we decided to go catch some perch rather than let everything go to waste.

We headed out toward the B Can area, dropped anchor, and apparently the perch felt bad for me because they decided to cooperate. šŸ˜‚ We ended up catching our limit of yellow perch!

I guess when life gives you lemons, you make lemonadeā€¦ or in this case, you make a perch dinner. šŸŽ£

The funny part is, the worst part of the whole day wasnā€™t getting stood up. I actually skipped my sonā€™s wrestling tournament because I had a charter booked. Sure wish I could have made it to that instead of sitting at the dock wondering if my customers were going to show up.

Definitely not how I pictured today going, but at least the perch cooperated. Sometimes you just have to make the best of what youā€™re handed.

And for the recordā€¦ Iā€™d still rather have been at that wrestling tournament. ā¤ļø

Once again, the weatherman and Mother Nature decided to have a little fun at our expense. šŸ˜‚

The forecast for Saturday called for 2ā€™-3ā€™ waves, but when I got to the lake, I found 3ā€™-4ā€™ waves with the occasional 5-footer mixed in. I called the customers to let them know what we were dealing with, and they decided they were up for the challenge.

We made the run out toward West Sister Island and tucked in there to get some relief from the wind and waves. Unfortunately, the perch didnā€™t seem to get the memo that we were there to catch fish. We managed to put about a dozen perch in the box for the day.

Definitely not the fishing trip any of us were hoping for, but the customers were great sports and made the best of a tough day on the water. Thatā€™s fishing sometimesā€”you can do everything right and the fish still get the final say!

I didnā€™t get any pictures of the fish, but I did manage to catch a pretty cool shot of an eagle perched on top of the West Sister Island lighthouse. Iā€™ll take that as a consolation prize! šŸ¦…šŸŽ£

Hopefully the next trip brings a little calmer water, a lot more cooperative perch, and a forecast that actually knows what itā€™s talking about. šŸ˜‚

Sorry folks, not much new to report. Mother Nature apparently has decided the fishermen of Lake Erie need a little time off. šŸ˜‚

Sheā€™s been blowing some pretty strong NE winds for the last week, which has resulted in cancelled trips both last weekend and this weekend. Not many boats have been able to get out, and from what Iā€™m hearing, the few that have made it out havenā€™t exactly been rewarded for their efforts.

Iā€™m hoping all this wind has at least done us one favor and cooled the water down enough to get these perch fired up. šŸ¤žšŸŽ£

So, for now, Iā€™ll keep the boat parked, the rods ready, and my fingers crossed. Iā€™ll give it another shot next weekend and hopefully weā€™ll finally get Mother Nature to cooperate with us!

Sunday I had the Dirr family from Napoleon aboard for an afternoon of hunting down the walleye that had eluded me the day before.
After getting set up, it took about an hour to find some active fish that wanted to cooperate. Once we did, things started to come together and we were finally getting into a groove. Unfortunately, just when it was getting good, the winds kicked up and Mother Nature decided it was time to head for the dock.
I sure wish we would have had another couple of hoursā€¦ I really think that cooler would have been filled!
What made this trip especially enjoyable was the Dirr family themselves. They were so laid back and genuinely didn't care if we caught a single fish. They were there to enjoy the day, spend time together, and make some memoriesā€”and that made my day pretty relaxing as well.
The only part I think we ALL could have done without was that ride back to the marina in 4-foot waves! šŸ˜³šŸŒŠšŸ˜‚
Thank you to the Dirr family for spending the afternoon with me and trusting Reel Therapy Sportfishing with your day on Lake Erie. Great people, great attitude, and a beautiful day on the waterā€¦ even if the lake decided to remind us who was really in charge!

On Saturday I had the pleasure of having a father-and-son duo from Indiana aboard!šŸŽ£
With the perch bite being pretty dismal, we decided to switch gears and head out in search of some walleye. Unfortunately, the walleye had other plans for us today! šŸ˜‚
Even though the fish didnā€™t cooperate the way we had hoped, it was still a beautiful day on Lake Erie, and thatā€™s what itā€™s all about. Great company, good conversation, and time spent together on the water.

Friday evening once again gave us less-than-desirable results, as these yellow perch continue to be pretty elusive. Some days, no matter how hard we work or how much time we put in, the fish simply donā€™t cooperateā€”and this has certainly been one of those stretches.
As a captain, I always want my customers to experience the kind of fishing they came for. That said, the smiles, laughs, and time spent on the water still made for a great evening with a great group.
At this point, Iā€™m starting to think it might be time to put the walleye gear back in the boat! Hopefully these perch decide to turn things around soon. šŸŽ£

Today was one of those days that adds a few more gray hairs. No matter what we tried, we just couldnā€™t get the fish to cooperate.
I had the Ankeney family from Ann Arbor aboard today, and while the fishing certainly didnā€™t go the way we had hoped, they were an absolute pleasure to have on the boat.
As a captain, nobody is more frustrated than I am when we canā€™t make the fish bite. We put in the time, make the adjustments, and keep grinding, but at the end of the day, Mother Nature and the fish always get the final say.
Days like today are a good reminder that we canā€™t control the outcomeā€”we can only control the effort we put in. Iā€™m grateful to the Ankeney family for trusting me with their day on the water and for being such great guests despite the tough fishing.
Not every trip ends with a cooler full of fish, but Iā€™m thankful for every group that steps aboard. šŸŽ£
