We can become so focused on fixing what hurts that we forget to ask what our body might be trying to tell us.

Sometimes the answer isn't another stretch or corrective exercise. Sometimes the body is asking for rest, safety, or simply for us to pay attention.

And as we learn to listen, its signals often become easier to recognize and understand. đź’™

If your neck and shoulders always seem to feel tight, stretching the tight spots is only part of the solution.

That tension is connected to the way we brace, breathe and move — especially when the nervous system has been working overtime.

I’m excited to return to Barefoot Works Yoga for my Neck & Shoulders Workshop, where we’ll explore why these patterns develop and how greater awareness, gentle mobility and intentional movement can help create more lasting ease.

We’ll look at the relationship between the neck, shoulders, upper back and breath, explore common bracing patterns, and work through simple movements you can continue using on your own.

We’ll also discuss everyday behaviors and strategies that can help reduce stress and give your nervous system more opportunities to settle.

Neck & Shoulders is the first workshop in a three-part series exploring the neck & shoulders, core & spine, and hips & pelvis. Each workshop can be attended individually or as part of the full series.

Wired but tired?

Your body is exhausted, but your mind won’t shut off.

You worry. You ruminate. You replay conversations and problems again and again.

Maybe you struggle to sleep, wake up with your jaw clenched and your body already tense, or live with aches and tightness that never fully go away.

Sometimes we live this way for so long that it simply starts to feel normal.

But what if you could understand why your mind and body respond this way — and learn to work with those patterns instead of constantly fighting them?

That’s what we explore in my Unlock Your Body: Breaking Free from Bracing workshops.

We start with education — exploring how stress, protective responses, breathing, and habitual tension can influence the way you think, feel, breathe, and move.

Then we put that understanding into practice through gentle movement, breath awareness, and simple nervous-system regulation tools you can use in daily life — helping you become a more active participant in your own healing.

But understanding your body intellectually is only part of the process.

Each workshop also includes a guided somatic experience — an opportunity to slow down and actually feel what’s happening inside your body. To notice where you’re holding. What changes when you soften. And what your body may be trying to communicate.

The goal isn’t to depend on someone else to tell you what your body needs.

It’s to develop a more intimate relationship with your body — and learn how to listen to it yourself.

I use the phrase “stuck nervous system” a lot. But what does that actually mean?

It can look like a racing mind, persistent worry or rumination, difficulty relaxing, chronic muscle tension, habitual bracing, or a body that always seems to be “on.”

And when the system is already working this hard, jumping straight into strengthening, correcting movement —or even stretching— may miss an important first step.

We first need to create awareness and help the body experience movement with less protection and more safety.

From there, mobility, stability and strength have a much better foundation to build on.

Sometimes the body just wants to move.

Sway. Reach. Shake. Rock. Twist. Breathe.

Free-flowing, rhythmic movement gives us an opportunity to get out of our heads and reconnect with what feels good in our bodies.

There doesn't always have to be a right way to move.

Your body doesn't always need more effort.

Sometimes it needs a chance to experience movement without bracing.

That's one of the reasons I spend so much time teaching slow, intentional movement. It's not always just about building strength or improving flexibility. Sometimes the body simply needs to feel safe enough to let go.

Most of us spend the day thinking about everything except what our bodies are doing.

But the body leaves clues.
A clenched jaw. Shallow breathing. A rushed exhale.

None of these are "bad." They're simply signs your nervous system may be working harder than it needs to.

Awareness isn't about fixing yourself. It's about noticing what's already there.

Because we can't change what we don't notice.

We spend a lot of time trying to make tight muscles relax.

The truth is, tight muscles aren't always just the result of exercise, posture, or getting older. Stress has a way of showing up physically, too. Over time, our muscles begin to hold on, and eventually that tension starts to feel normal.

Stretching is an incredibly effective way to interrupt that pattern.

Not because it forces muscles to lengthen, but because gentle assisted stretching can provide the body with a sense of safety, allowing it to slow down, breathe, and begin letting go of tension it no longer needs to carry.

It's one of the reasons I enjoy this work so much. Helping someone move a little easier isn't just about flexibility—it's about helping them reconnect with a body that's been working hard to protect them.

A little less tension changes a lot more than we expect.

Tight hips aren't always a flexibility problem.

Sometimes they're a sign that your body no longer feels safe to move the way it was designed.

This Sunday at BambooMoves Lebanon, we'll explore why the hips and pelvis often become a place where the body stores stress and protective tension, and how gentle movement can help release those patterns safely.

There are just a few spots still available, and I'd love to have you join us.

I often tell people in my workshops that we can't release tension we don't know we're holding.

That's why awareness is where the process begins.

For anyone who has spent years pushing through stress, pain, or fatigue, awareness is often the first step toward recognizing patterns the body has been carrying all along.

But awareness isn't the finish line. As the nervous system begins to experience safety, the body becomes more willing to move. And through those new experiences, trust in the body can begin to return.

Awareness. Safety. Movement.

All three matter.
