A new school year is the perfect time to build healthy habits. A few small steps now can help your family ease into the new year.

- Pack backpacks the smart way. A backpack should weigh no more than 10–15% of your child's body weight. Pack heavier items closest to the back, use both shoulder straps, and adjust the straps so the backpack fits snugly.
- Practice healthy hygiene. Encourage regular handwashing and covering sneezes and coughs to prevent the spread of germs.
- Keep your child hydrated and fueled with healthy foods.
- Start adjusting bedtimes and wake-up times a little earlier each day. A regular sleep schedule can help your child feel less nervous on the first day, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.

And remember, going back to school does not have to feel like a bummer. Seeing friends and learning new things are part of what makes it fun!

Healthy vision plays a big role in how well your child does at school. Reading, writing, using computers, and even chalkboard work all depend on healthy eyes.

If your child squints, rubs their eyes often, or gets frequent headaches, it could be a sign they need glasses.

Parkland Community Health Plan partners with Avesis for eye exams and glasses. STAR Medicaid and CHIP members age 20 or younger can get an eye exam and glasses every 12 months. STAR members age 21 and older can get an eye exam every 24 months. No referral from your primary care provider is needed.

Schedule your child's eye exam today. Call 1-866-678-7113 or visit the Avesis website to find a doctor near you.

As you prepare for the first day of school, don't forget to check that your child's vaccinations are up to date. Many schools ask for proof of certain vaccines before the first day of class. Check with your child's school to find out which vaccines your child needs.

Your child can get vaccines at no cost during their yearly checkup with your STAR Medicaid or CHIP plan.

Call your child's primary care provider today to set up a visit.
