On the first Monday of September, the United States celebrates, honors, and recognizes the American labor movement and the works and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements in the United States. Workers sought better working conditions, fair wages, and reasonable hours. Labor unions played a vital role in advocating for these changes. Prominent leaders pushed for a day to honor workers. A suggestion to honor the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882 sparked a movement that aimed to recognize the rights and efforts of American workers. Hence annual parades and celebrations eventually led to the creation of a Labor Day holiday, recognizing the efforts of American workers and workers' rights.

So take the day to pause from the hustle of everyday life; enjoy your families.

Since 1989, Recovery Month also known as National Alcohol & Drug Recovery Month, is observed every September to celebrate the gains made by those in recovery from substance use disorder. The month also promotes and supports new treatment and recovery practices, the nation's strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible. The year's theme, "Recovery is REAL (Restoring Every Aspect of Life)", emphasizes that with the right treatment, support, and resources, recovery is possible . . . for everyone.

I don't need to tell you how important senior citizens are to our society as they carry decades of knowledge, experience, and memories. Their contributions have shaped families, workspaces, neighborhoods, educational institutions, businesses, and communities. They share traditions, family histories, cultural practices, personal experiences, and lessons learned over the course of their lives. Respecting older adults also helps create a society where people can look forward to aging without feeling that they will lose their value or sense of belonging.

Although aging can be a rewarding stage of life, many seniors face challenges that deserve attention. Loneliness, isolation, financial concerns with retirement, rising living expenses, mobility and accessibility, transportation, and even technology creates a gap between generations.

Creating a society that respects older adults today helps build a better environment for future generations. Perhaps the most important message is simple: people want to feel valued at every age. A conversation, a visit, a helping hand, or a sincere expression of gratitude can make a meaningful difference.

August serves as a reminder to teach kids about school safety, get the back-to-school shopping done, finish up the summer reading list, and purchase supplies. Whether your child is driving to school for the first time, taking the bus, bicycling, or walking with friends, this month is the perfect opportunity to teach your kids how to stay safe. This includes focusing on where they're going (rather than texting), being aware of crosswalks, respecting the speed limit, utilizing safety equipment (seat belts, helmets, etc.), and walking in front of the bus rather than behind it. That means earlier bedtimes, more reading, less TV, and prepping for scheduled days rather than laid back ones.

Get ready to embrace new learning opportunities and set the stage for a productive school year.

World Brain Day unites people globally every July 22 to spotlight the importance of brain health. This annual observance, championed by the World Federation of Neurology (WFN), aims to raise awareness about neurological diseases and promote prevention strategies. Join the movement by educating yourself, supporting research, and advocating for better brain care.

This global initiative addresses a critical disparity: while neuroscientific progress is accelerating, over 3.4 billion peopleโ€”more than 40% of the global populationโ€”currently live with neurological conditions. This makes brain disorders the leading cause of disability worldwide.

Follow these tips for better brain health:
1. Prioritize quality sleep
2. Exercise regularly
3. Eat a brain-healthy diet
4. Stay mentally active
5. Reduce chronic stress
6. Stay socially connected
7. Limit alcohol and avoid smoking
8. Hydrate your brain (need 7-8 glasses of water daily; the brain is 75% water)
