That bump that showed up out of nowhere and everyone's calling a spider bite? Actual spider bites are rare. What's usually going on is a skin infection — bacteria like Staph, Strep, or MRSA that already live on the skin, finding a way in through a small cut, bug bite, or blemish.

The simple version, cellulitis, usually just needs about a week of oral antibiotics. A more advanced one, an abscess, needs to be drained by a provider — not handled at home.

Either way, something that's growing, getting more painful, or turning warm and red is worth a same-day look. Walk in, no appointment needed.

New shoes show up everywhere in August — school shoes for the kids, new work shoes for the job that finally requires them, the pair someone bought because fall race season just started and marathon training begins now. All of it adds up to a lot of new blisters this time of year.

Most of the time, it's exactly what it looks like: some friction, some redness, gone in a few days. But a blister that's swollen, warm to the touch, or draining anything other than clear fluid is a different situation, whether it's on a six-year-old's foot or a first-time half-marathoner's.

Myth: a missed shot means starting the schedule over.
