As you can see, body image is so much more than simply what you see when you look in the mirror and anyone can experience body dysmorphia.
Underlying thoughts, beliefs, emotions and experiences can all play a role in how we experience ourselves in our bodies.
This can be impacted by circumstances, clothing, physical fullness, bloating, constipation and many others variables.
Body image can and usually does vary from time to time, even minute by minute for some making it very challenging to accurately assess one’s appearance.
Telling someone, “You’re not fat” or “Stop worrying about the way you look” is not helpful or supportive.
Understanding all of the many components that can impact the way we view our bodies helps us to better understand the distortions we may be experiencing as well as empowers us to better discern between facts and feelings.
Over time, you can learn how to properly care for your body irregardless of whether or not you’re having a good body image day and you can rewire your brain to decrease preoccupation about your body over time. 🤎
