The five internal organs correspond to the following emotions: The heart governs joy: excessive joy can scatter the heart's energy and cause restlessness. The liver governs anger: excessive anger can cause liver energy to rise, leading to headaches and a flushed face. The spleen governs worry: excessive worry can cause spleen qi stagnation and loss of appetite. The lungs govern grief: excessive grief can deplete lung qi and cause shortness of breath. The kidneys govern fear: excessive fear can weaken kidney qi and cause essence to leak away.
