Thanks to The Dallas Morning News and Dallas County Health and Human Services for highlighting the ongoing importance of routine childhood vaccinations! Read more about the DCHHS study in the Dallas Medical Journal. As we're in back-to-school season, check with your child's pediatrician's office or find a DCHHS clinic to keep your child safe and up to date.

Dallas County has seen no confirmed cases of measles this year, and public health officials want to keep it that way. But declining vaccinations make that goal more challenging.

Flea-borne (murine) typhus cases are rising in Dallas County. Dallas County Health and Human Services is asking area physicians to keep it in mind when patients present with compatible symptoms.

Murine typhus is being seen more often across the US, yet due to relative rarity, clinicians may be less familiar with its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment. The Dallas County Medical Society partnered with the Travis County Medical Society and hosted a webinar to help clinicians recognize and manage this infectious disease.

Speakers:
🔹 Emma Dishner, MD — Board Certified Infectious Diseases Physician, North Texas Infectious Diseases Consultants, Baylor Scott & White – Baylor University Medical Center
🔹 Desmar Walkes, MD — Medical Director/Health Authority, Austin Public Health, Austin Travis County

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• Consider murine typhus in patients with compatible clinical presentations and epidemiological risk factors
• Understand treatment options for murine typhus
• Understand laboratory testing options to inform diagnosis

▶️ Watch the replay: https://na2.hubs.ly/H071z810 📄 Transmission, symptoms, treatment, and prevention are covered in the DCHHS fact sheet at https://na2.hubs.ly/H071xcM0

CME is not available for this webinar replay. Information was current to June 25, 2026; clinicians should check CDC, DSHS, or DCHHS for the most up-to-date recommendations.

National blood supply crisis declared amid historic donation drop!

Extreme heat, poor air quality, and foodborne illness outbreaks have caused blood donations to fall to a four-year low, leading to urgent O-positive shortages and hospital rationing. Physicians are encouraged to share donation resources with patients and staff. Donations may be made at American Red Cross Greater North Texas and Carter BloodCare.

We’re halfway through an incredible week with the first-ever class of our Next Generation Physicians Program!

Our students have been exploring public health, hematology, human physiology, and pharmacology through hands-on learning with physicians and medical students. They’re also experiencing college life by living on campus, building new friendships, and working together on projects that challenge them to think like future healthcare professionals.

The energy, curiosity, and enthusiasm this inaugural class has brought each day has been inspiring. We can’t wait to see all they accomplish during the rest of the week!

A special thank you to our generous donors and our Board of Directors for believing in this vision and making this life-changing opportunity possible for these students.

Enjoy a few highlights from the first half of camp!
