Beautiful tins of sardines lined the shelves all over Portugal, from little markets to specialty shops. Fresh sardines weren’t in season during our visit, so we didn’t get the chance to try them grilled the traditional way, but we did have an amazing canned version in a flavorful tomato sauce that was delicious!
And nutritionally, sardines are seriously underrated. Sardines are one of the best natural sources of omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA. What makes sardines especially interesting for gut health is their anti-inflammatory profile and nutrient density. Chronic gut inflammation can negatively impact the microbiome, and omega-3-rich foods help support a healthier intestinal environment. Sardines also provide vitamin D, selenium, calcium, and high-quality protein which are all nutrients involved in immune function and gut integrity.
Another benefit: because sardines are small cold-water fish low on the food chain, they tend to accumulate significantly fewer heavy metals like mercury compared to larger fish such as tuna. That makes them a safer and more sustainable seafood option for regular consumption.
Tiny fish. Massive nutritional payoff. 🐟
