What do you get when you combine two dietitian business coaches talking about changes in private practice and what RDs business owners need to know?! 👀

A very real conversation about where private practice is right now... and where it’s headed next.

In this episode of The Dietitian Business Podcast, I sit down with fellow dietitian business coach Jennifer McGurk of Pursuing Private Practice to talk about the biggest shifts happening in private practice… from telehealth companies and GLP-1s to insurance vs. private pay, AI, burnout, and pivoting your business as your life changes.

We’re talking about:
→ How big telehealth companies are changing the private practice landscape
→ Where GLP-1s fit into the future of dietetics
→ Insurance vs. private pay—and how to differentiate yourself
→ How AI is changing the way we run our businesses
→ Why your business should evolve as your life changes
→ Burnout and why private practice isn’t necessarily the cure

Whether you’re thinking about starting a private practice, running solo, or managing a team, this episode is packed with practical insights on what’s working, what’s changing, and what might be coming next.

And Jennifer’s biggest piece of advice for RDs?

GO. FOR. IT.

Last month, a client shared the quote with me: “You’re not starting over, you’re starting from experience.”

And, it hit me exactly when I needed it.

It made me feel less hollow, embarrassed, and scared, plus a little more confident. Funny how I can learn just as much or more from my clients, even when they’re coming to learn from me.

Most importantly, it reminded me that I am ACTUALLY not starting over from scratch. I’m beginning a new chapter WITH legit, real experience.

Over the past year, I’ve started over multiple times, in multiple ways…

I went from a 4,000-square-foot house with a family to 1,300-square feet by myself. I went from owning a 30-person practice back down to working full-time for another company, then back down to a solo shop. I went from a marriage to a divorce to a boyfriend, and back to being completely single again.

And some days, it feels really freakin’ hard to build everything up from scratch.

Other days, I’m incredibly thankful for the opportunity to rebuild my life and my business from the ground up… exactly how I want them this time, with all the experience I’ve gained about what I do want, what I don’t want, what works for me, and what definitely doesn’t.

If you’ve ever had to rebuild your life (or even just one piece of it), I feel you. My heart goes out to you.

But also… how lucky are we to get to rebuild with the knowledge we have now?

We’re not the same people we were the first time around.

So, here are three things I’ve been reminding myself when it feels like I’m starting over:

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear from dietitians is: "I'll focus on leadership once my practice grows."

But leadership doesn't begin when you hire your first employee...

It begins the moment you take ownership of your practice, your decisions, and the direction you're headed.

It reminds me of Nike's famous quote, "If you have a body, you're an athlete."

I'd argue the business version is, "If you have a practice, you're a leader."

Leadership isn't just about managing people. It's about taking ownership, making decisions, solving problems, and accepting responsibility for the outcome... even when things don't go according to plan (spoiler alert: they don't).

Whether you're seeing one client a week, building a group practice, or somewhere in between, you're influencing people every single day.

One of my favorite leadership concepts is Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink. It has completely changed how I think about running a business, and it's a principle we discuss inside the Dietitian Business Network.

One of the biggest mistakes I see aspiring private practice owners make?

Waiting until they feel "ready."

The problem is... confidence doesn't come before you start.

It comes because you start.

In this coaching session, we talk about:
• Overcoming perfectionism
• Pricing your services
• Structuring client sessions
• Launching before you feel ready

Your first client doesn't need perfection.

They need you.
