We spent a lot of time crunching numbers on graphing calculators in school. Now the numbers that matter most are blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and overall cardiovascular risk. Stroke can happen at any age, and knowing your numbers matters.

“Being Miss America means that I have the honor of being the National ambassador for the American Heart Association,” said Miss America 2026 Cassie Donegan. “And that's really special to me because I'm the daughter of a multi stroke and heart attack survivor.”

Cassie joined the Heart Association at the Go Red for Women 2026 Red Dress Collection Concert to help raise awareness about women’s heart and brain health.

“My mom had her first stroke at only 30 and thankfully my mom is still here to tell her own story,” she said. “But that's not the reality for everyone.”

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women, taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined.

At the Red Dress Collection Concert, Cassie wore designs by Alexander Collection on the red carpet and Romey Roe on the runway.

Last year, Cassie also joined America Heart Association leaders, cardiac arrest survivors and fellow advocates in Washington, D.C., to support funding for the HEARTS Act. The bipartisan legislation creates grant opportunities that help schools purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs), develop cardiac emergency response plans, and expand CPR and AED training nationwide.

For Cassie, the legislation represents a practical way to save lives by ensuring that students and staff have the tools and training they need to respond during a cardiac emergency.

She has made other appearances with the Heart Association throughout her reign, honoring her mother while educating young women.

Go Red for Women is the Miss America’s Scholarship Foundation’s national health thought leader, empowering the next generation of women to take charge of their health and make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of communities nationwide.

Laura Sammons was approaching a red light with her family in their minivan when suddenly she forgot how to drive. As cars swerved to miss them, her husband, Nick, grabbed the wheel and steered into a parking lot.

Laura, a lawyer and Air Force veteran, said her arm was numb but otherwise struggled to explain how she felt. Nick insisted they go to the emergency room. Doctors chalked up the episode to paralytic migraines. Not satisfied with that explanation, later that week Laura went to a cardiologist and neurologist for more testing.

Not only had she had a stroke while driving, but she also had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale, or PFO, and an irregular heartbeat known as atrial fibrillation, or AFib. Both conditions raise the risk of stroke.

After the stroke, Laura, a mother of five, couldn’t remember what she’d read. When she spoke, words flowed out of order, and she would call objects the wrong word. “My initial response was: ‘Everything I am, I can’t be anymore. … So who does that make me?’ It was a challenge.”

After a successful ablation to control her AFib, Laura’s recovery accelerated. She no longer needs any heart medications and gets regular exercise. She’s holding off for now on surgery to repair her heart’s hole.

Laura is grateful to the doctors who initially recognized the stroke and what caused it. “When I wasn’t satisfied with the answers I had been given, they took my concerns seriously and put in the effort to identify the real problem and provide the treatment I needed.”

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, but many heart and stroke events can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and awareness of personal risk factors.

"I want women to know that knowledge is power," said stage and screen actress Ali Ahn. She joined Go Red for Women at the 2026 Red Dress Collection Concert to help raise awareness for cardiovascular health.

Ali’s grandfathers had strokes and other family members have high blood pressure.

“Know your family history so you can take charge of your health,” she said. “And talk to your healthcare professional about your risk for heart disease and stroke.”

Ali wore Rowen Rose on the red carpet and Gustavo Cadile on the runway.

. Miss America 2026 Cassie Donegan walked the runway at the Red Dress Collection Concert in New York City this January, raising awareness for women's heart health.

As the Miss America 2027 competition kicks off this week, we thank Cassie for her unwavering advocacy for the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women movement. Inspired by her mother's experience with multiple strokes and a heart attack, Cassie has spent her reign educating women about cardiovascular disease and the importance of knowing their risk.

"Heart disease doesn't discriminate by age,” she said. “The more we can educate people, the more lives we can save."

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death among women, yet it remains underrecognized, particularly among younger women.

Go Red for Women is supported by the Miss America’s Scholarship Foundation, empowering the next generation of women to take charge of their health and make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of communities nationwide.
