Stephanie Scarmo approaches her work with one goal in mind: making a difference.

Growing up, she was inspired by her grandfather (third photo), who served as a local elected official in his small town for 14 years. She watched him navigate complex decisions with care, always taking the time to understand both sides and lead with integrity. Those early lessons continue to shape how she shows up each day at the American Heart Association.

As a National Senior Policy Analyst with 8 years at Heart, Stephanie channels her love of science into policy, helping inform decisions at the federal, state, and local levels.

Receiving the Heart and Torch Award for 2024–2025, this recognition reflects more than individual achievement. It highlights the power of collaboration. “I’m privileged to work with colleagues across Science, Healthy Living, and Communications who push me to grow.”

Stephanie joined to turn science into action and stays to help create health and hope for everyone, everywhere. 💫

Shelby Wolf had just stepped off a bus in Chicago when she heard someone urgently asking if there was a doctor nearby. Moments earlier, she had been talking with a friend about the importance of knowing CPR, and suddenly, that conversation became reality.

As Shelby approached the commotion, she saw an unconscious woman lying nearby. A man had already called 911 and was on the phone with dispatchers, but he was distraught and struggling to perform CPR on his friend.

Drawing on her CPR training, Shelby stepped in and performed chest compressions until EMS arrived. Thanks in part to her quick action, the woman survived.

For Shelby, Development Director for Chicago Go Red for Women at the American Heart Association, the experience made the mission deeply personal.

“Like so many families, mine has been deeply impacted by cardiovascular disease,” Shelby shared. “Those moments stay with you. And then, performing CPR brought everything full circle. In a matter of seconds, it went from something I advocate for every day to something I had to do.”

Her passion for prevention inspired her to run her first marathon with the Association’s Run with Heart team during the Chicago Marathon. “It was about honoring the people I’ve lost, taking control of my own health, and living out the mission in a tangible way,” she said.

“We can’t predict when something will happen,” Shelby said. “But we can choose to equip ourselves and the people we love with the knowledge and tools to respond.”

When the whistle blew, Jayme Pierson (middle of first photo) didn’t hesitate. She acted.

At 19, while working as a pool manager, Jayme heard the three-whistle signal every lifeguard knows means emergency. During adult swim, a woman in her 70s had gone into cardiac arrest and was pulled from the water. Without an AED on site at the time, Jayme and her team relied on their training. Each lifeguard stepped into their role. Jayme took on chest compressions.

“I went into focus mode. Everything was quiet except for doing what we were trained to do.”

She remembers the intensity of that moment, even the physical reality of performing CPR and knowing she was going deep enough to try to save a life. When EMS arrived, they used an AED and transported the woman to the hospital. She was revived and lived for about a week longer.

Later, Jayme and her team attended the woman’s funeral. What stayed with her most was what the family shared. Because of their actions, they had more time to say goodbye.

Today, Jayme serves as SVP of Western States Corporate Relations and has been with the American Heart Association for 18 years. While her path into nonprofit work began after her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, that moment at the pool gave her a deeply personal connection to the mission.

“When I made the tie to the American Heart Association and CPR, it became my personal passion.”

Her story is a reminder that anyone can make a life-saving difference. You are never too young to act. And in those critical moments, being prepared means everything, not just for the person in need, but for everyone who loves them.

This month, we proudly celebrated Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month across the American Heart Association ❤️

Throughout May, our AAPI+ Heart Alliance ERG helped spotlight the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of AAPI+ communities through storytelling, cultural education, and meaningful conversations.

One highlight was a special conversation with award-winning filmmaker Richa Rudola, whose work explores identity, motherhood, mental health, and advocacy. Her storytelling sparked thoughtful dialogue about topics such as benefits, like Paid Family Medical Leave, and the importance of supporting families and communities.

A huge thank you to our AAPI+ Heart Alliance ERG for leading this celebration and creating spaces for connection, learning, and representation. We’re grateful for the impact they continue to make across our organization.

After experiencing a hypertensive disorder during pregnancy and facing an emergency postpartum complication, Heather saw firsthand how vulnerable women can feel and just how critical education, monitoring, and compassionate support truly are.

“That experience drove my commitment to improving maternal health outcomes, advocating for women, elevating awareness of pregnancy and postpartum risks, and helping ensure families receive evidence-based care during one of the most important moments of their lives,” Heather shared.

Today, Heather helps lead impactful work across our women and family health initiatives as our National Senior Lead, including maternal health and menopause awareness efforts through Go Red for Women. She also leads our National Alliance with the Miss America Scholarship Foundation, helping connect contestants and communities to lifesaving education and mission moments.

From supporting the annual Go Red for Women Class of Survivors and Red Dress Collection Concert to helping provide Hands-Only CPR training to more than 100 Miss America contestants, Heather’s work is creating meaningful change for women and families nationwide.

Thank you, Heather, for turning your personal experience into purpose and advocacy that helps save and improve lives every day. ❤️

The future of health isn’t something we wait for; it’s something we lead.

At the American Heart Association, we see AI as more than a technology shift. It is a defining leadership moment that challenges us to rethink what is possible for our mission, our people, and the communities we serve.

That is why we launched Leaders Leading AI, a hands-on learning journey bringing our senior leaders together to:
• Use AI thoughtfully and responsibly
• Strengthen decision-making
• Unlock new ways to advance our mission

Guided by Stanford Human-Centered AI Institute faculty, our leaders are exploring how AI can enhance human potential and help solve some of the most complex challenges.

Soon, we will expand this work across our organization with Employees Engaging AI, because we believe everyone should have the opportunity to grow, contribute, and lead in this new era.

If you are looking to do meaningful work and help shape the future of health in a world transformed by AI, head to http://spr.ly/6183BBvLsf today.
