When kidney function declines to an 𝗲𝗚𝗙𝗥 𝗼𝗳 𝟮𝟬 𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝘄, a patient can begin the evaluation process for placement on the kidney transplant waiting list.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿?

𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Delaying the evaluation process could mean losing valuable waiting time while kidney disease continues to progress.

Doctors and medical teams manage many important aspects of kidney care, but patients and families should also advocate for themselves. If your eGFR is approaching 20, 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗮 𝗸𝗶𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The national transplant system is overseen by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) through the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN).

Hi friends and family, this is Maria.

I wanted to share a personal update. I am still searching for a living kidney donor. I know donating a kidney may sound overwhelming, but many people are surprised to learn that donating generally does not affect the donor's health insurance and does not require the donor to pay for the evaluation or surgery.
I hope the information below from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services helps answer some common questions.

The recipient's insurance—not the donor's insurance—typically pays for the donor's evaluation, surgery, and immediate hospital care.

That means if the donor is accepted as your living donor:

✅ Their donor evaluation is generally covered.

✅ Their donor surgery is generally covered.

✅ Their hospital stay is generally covered.

The donor usually does not receive a bill for donating, provided everything is part of the approved transplant process.

However, there can still be some expenses that insurance may not fully cover, such as:

• Lost wages while recovering.

• Travel, meals, parking, or hotel costs if needed.

• Childcare or other incidental expenses.

Some nonprofit organizations and assistance programs can help with these costs if they apply.

ALERT:

Most kidney transplant programs in the Dallas–Fort Worth area allow patients to begin the transplant evaluation process before their eGFR reaches 20—often when it is between 20 and 30. Once a patient's eGFR reaches 20 or below and they meet the program's eligibility requirements, they may be placed on the national kidney transplant waiting list.

So keep in mind that some doctor’s do not follow these guidelines exactly so you should confirm with your nephrologist and your transplant hospital to confirm when you will be able to start the evaluation process.

You could be delayed for month's or even years from getting on National Kidney Transplant Waiting List. So make sure you ask this question.

Donating is safe. Most kidney donors are usually up, walking around, eating and drinking by the next day after the operation.
