What is post traumatic arthritis in the ankle?
Post traumatic arthritis develops after an ankle injury, such as a fracture or severe sprain. Even after the initial injury heals, damage within the joint can lead to long-term changes over time.
These injuries can affect the cartilage that protects the joint, causing it to wear down more quickly. As the joint surface deteriorates, patients may begin to experience pain, stiffness, and swelling that gradually worsens.
One of the challenges with post traumatic arthritis is that symptoms may not appear until months or even years after the original injury. Because progression varies based on the severity of the injury, treatment should always be individualized. As a Dallas foot and ankle surgeon, I focus on managing symptoms and restoring function with both non surgical and surgical options.
