Your body is not just running on chemistry. It is running on light.
Every cell in your body contains mitochondria, and those mitochondria are continuously emitting photons. Not as a side effect. Not as waste. As part of the fundamental process of being alive.
The primary source of these biophotons is the mitochondria, where oxidative metabolism produces photon emissions as a direct byproduct of energy production. These emissions span a considerable spectral range, from ultraviolet through visible light into near-infrared, produced constantly, in every tissue, in every organ, throughout your entire life.
Clusters of mitochondria appear to fire bursts of photons that influence neighboring cells, potentially synchronizing metabolic rhythms across tissues. Experiments using barriers opaque to these emissions showed measurably depressed growth rates in adjacent cell cultures, suggesting the light itself carries functional information between cells.
The brain, the most energy-intensive organ in the body, produces the highest concentration of this activity. Biophotons emitted by neurons may inform neighboring neurons of their activity state, influencing mitochondrial function, energy production, and ion channel behavior across a broad spectral range.
A 2025 study imaging live subjects in near-total darkness captured photon flux dropping abruptly at the moment of death. Researchers described it as watching a candle go out.
That image is hard to dismiss. The light does not fade gradually. It stops. Life and biophoton emission appear to be the same event, observed two different ways.
Whether this light constitutes a full communication system or represents something even more fundamental about biological organization is what researchers are still working to understand.
