Many patients assume that getting a hip replacement means giving up an active lifestyle. Fortunately, that's often not the case.

Activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, swimming, golf, and strength training are generally well tolerated after hip replacement.

For higher-impact activities like running, jumping, and heavy lifting, the picture is less clear. Today's implants use significantly more durable materials, and the results we have so far are encouraging. However, because these materials haven't been around for several decades, we don't yet have definitive long-term data on their performance under higher-impact demands.

The goal is not to limit activity unnecessarily, but to help patients make informed decisions based on the best evidence availablr. What activities would you like to return to after hip replacement?

"Will I still be able to do the things I enjoy after a hip replacement?"

I hear some version of that question almost every week.

For most patients, the answer is yes. In fact, the goal of hip replacement is to help you get back to the activities that pain has been limiting.

In this video, I discuss the types of activities that are generally best after hip replacement and why low-impact exercise tends to be the healthiest choice for long-term implant longevity.

What activity would you most like to get back to if hip pain wasn't holding you back?

A little time to explore Nashville after the Anterior Hip Foundation meeting. Broadway was packed for CMA Fest, the live music was everywhere, and I finally got to try Nashville hot chicken.

Great city. Great energy. Great food.

This weekend I'm attending the 2026 Anterior Hip Foundation Meeting, where surgeons from around the country come together to discuss the latest research, techniques, and innovations in hip replacement surgery.
One of the things I love about medicine is that learning never stops. These meetings are an opportunity to challenge our assumptions, learn from one another, and continue refining how we care for patients.
Looking forward to a great few days and bringing those lessons back to my patients here in Connecticut.

Hip pain with walking, stiffness getting out of a chair, groin pain, or bone-on-bone arthritis? Many people ask what is replaced during hip replacement surgery. In this video I show how the damaged femoral head is replaced and the worn socket is resurfaced to help restore smoother motion and relieve pain.
If hip arthritis is limiting your life, there are treatment options available.

Your joints are meant to move smoothly.
When that surface changes, movement can feel rough, stiff, or catch.
Arthritis is one common cause—but it’s not the only one.

Hip replacement is about removing the worn, arthritic surfaces and rebuilding the joint.
A new socket with a smooth liner, a new ball, and a stem that anchors it in the thighbone.
The goal is smoother, more reliable movement than an arthritic hip.
For most people, this significantly improves hip pain and function.
