H**p has a long history in Kentucky long before its modern resurgence.

Kentucky’s first recorded h**p crop was grown near Danville in 1775, where Archibald McNeill reportedly brought the first h**p seed with him.

H**p production expanded across the state over the following decades. From 1840 to 1860, Kentucky was the largest h**p-producing state in the United States.

Production reached its peak in 1850, when Kentucky produced approximately 40,000 tons of h**p, valued at $5 million.

The crop also supported a growing manufacturing industry. Kentucky factories processed h**p into products including twine, rope, bagging, and other fiber materials.

H**p remained Kentucky’s largest cash crop until 1915, when the market declined in part because of competition from imported jute.

Today, Kentucky is once again part of the conversation around h**p and its potential applications.
