A client came in complaining that she couldn't lift her shoulder because it felt tied down. Key information is that this happened after a double mastectomy. She had been suffering for over 10 years and had seen her oncologist, plastic surgeon, orthopedist, and general practitioner, and they all said she had frozen shoulder. I identified some cording issues (where lymphatic vessels basically become cords, tying a joint into a specific position) and suggested she discuss it with her doctor. He agreed and adjusted her therapy accordingly.

A few years ago, I had a group of 3 30-something-year-old males present with pulled groin muscles. 2 of the 3 were legit pulled groin muscles; the third was not. I referred him to his doctor, explaining that his symptoms were not the same as his colleagues' and that something else was going on that massage would not address. Turns out his pelvic bone had necrosis, and he needed a full hip replacement. He likely would have kept complaining about a pulled hip muscle if I hadn't referred him out.
