Beach day turned into a stingray surprise? 🌊💥

If you or someone in your group gets stung, knowing what to do—and what not to do—makes all the difference. Here is your quick guide to stingray safety!

Why the "Stingray Shuffle"? Stingrays aren't aggressive; they sting in self-defense when stepped on! Sliding or shuffling your feet through the sand as you walk through the water sends them swimming away before you step on one.

If You Do Get Stung:

*Hot Water Immersion (The #1 Relief Step): Stingray venom is heat-labile, meaning heat breaks down the protein toxins causing that intense pain. Soak the foot/leg in hot water (as hot as safely tolerable without burning, around 110°F–113°F) for 60 to 90 minutes.

*Get Professional Medical Care: A sting isn't just a burn—it’s a deep puncture wound. You will need a medical provider to inspect the area for leftover barb fragments or tissue damage.

*Injections & Pain Relief: A healthcare professional can administer a therapeutic injection for severe pain and a tetanus booster if you aren't up to date.

*Antibiotics are Crucial: Marine environments are packed with bacteria. Because stingray punctures push ocean bacteria deep into the tissue, medical providers often prescribe targeted antibiotics to prevent severe infections like cellulitis.

Shuffle your feet when you’re in the water, and if you get stung, head to Dauphin Island Medical, urgent care or your primary provider right away for proper hot water immersion, wound clearance, and medication! 🏖️🩺
