STEPS Dayton

STEPS Dayton STEPS is a student run, multidisciplinary, preventative health program for underserved communities.

"Students Teaching Educational Plans for Success" is modeled after a health program started in Cincinnati by an interdisciplinary committee. Motivational interviewing, the science of behavior change, and evidence-based preventive strategies form our theoretical foundation. We hope to work in solidarity with the community towards better health. Sessions will be one Saturday a morning every month un

til we convert to weekly sessions. During each session health science students and a faculty member will be doing the following:

1.Screening community members for high blood pressure, obesity, and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
2.Using self-management support and partnerships with local free clinics to improve chronic care outcomes and decrease emergency room visits
3.Using a community-based approach to increase health literacy and nutritional competency.
4.Employing quality improvement principles of effectiveness, efficiency, equity, patient safety, patient-centeredness and timeliness in the clinic

Are you looking to become to an active member of STEPS? Then consider applying for the 2018-2019 Executive Board Committee, especially if you have volunteered with us in the past! Even if you have not volunteered, you can still apply! Applications will be accepted until 11:59pm on March 24th; so, send yours in immediately to the STEPS email at [email protected]!

STEPS stands for Students Teaching Educational Plans for Success. It is a student led, multidisciplinary, preventative health program for the underserved communities of Dayton, Ohio. Currently, we volunteer at the local shelters, which include the Men's, Women's and Children, and Daybreak (an adolescent/young adult center). This winter we have also began volunteering with Miracle Clubhouse - a mental health focused program. As an inter professional team of doctors, pharmacists, psychologists, and physician assistants, we perform motivational interviewing and provide health screenings (blood pressure, blood glucose, weight checks, etc.) at these facilities to help ensure this vulnerable population has access to what he or she may need to either stay or get on track to be healthy!

As a member of the Executive Committee, you will be able to help coordinate and plan these sessions, while also having the opportunity to lead! Not only does this opportunity allow you to give back to the community, but also it enables you the chance to interact with other healthcare professions to see just how important each key player is in taking care of the whole patient! As a Board member, you will even get the chance to implement changes to further improve the program! Not to mention, the experience in these specific roles will enable you opportunities later in your career! For example, if you choose to apply for the grant writer, you will then learn how to properly draft and apply for grants, which could be beneficial later if you choose to either work for a non-profit organization or to take the research route! So, take a look at the positions to see which may interest and benefit you for what you want to accomplish as a doctor, pharmacist, psychologist, or physician assistant!

If interested, message us so we can send you an application! Positions include Co-chair, Committee Chair, and Committee Member) Please, send ALL applications to the STEPS email (step[email protected]) by 11:59pm on March 24th. Also, if you have any further questions, contact the current Co-Chairs, Kara Lish ([email protected]) or Daniel Keltner ([email protected]).
